Both games are good. Depends on what you are looking for/what you like.
As for the game itself, it's a blast from the past. The locations may look a bit dated, blocky, but the level of detail is insane, especially for the first game in the series, the level design is top notch.
In terms of replayability, everything is fine.
The locations feel empty, the bosses aren't that difficult, but the game itself is much bigger than the first one, and if you play it with friends or strangers, it's worth it.
In our opinion, it should be noted that it is the best PvP in the series.
But in terms of gameplay it's improved: the base/original game is more polished, there are more monsters, some paths are blocked, and the gameplay feels better, but at first the monsters can easily overwhelm you with their sheer number.
Multiplayer mode supports more players.

You might want to check out the Steam reviews for these and other games that interest you.
We also suggest you take a look at other games, don't just focus on these two - because there are many more better games (depending on what suits you better).
* Note: Since the game has a multiplayer mode, hackers may appear from time to time (there are enough reports about them) - some will try to ruin your game, some will try to help you in some strange way. If you choose one of these games - be prepared for this.
There are terms and conditions, and if we remember correctly, you can request a refund if you don't like the game. You have about two hours of the game to try out within a full two weeks from the date of purchase.

Although it may seem obvious, choose only what you really like.
I won't defend DS2, it is not my favourite, but like any game choices, this is subjective. And more than that, in his opinion is just biasing.
Yes, DS2 from steam forums at least, is overall the least favourite of the DS series, but not for everyone. And that does not mean it is a bad game to just dismiss. Far from it, play the series in order 1-2-3 and enjoy each one for what it is, but do not expect DS2 to Wow! you like DS1 will. It's that simple.
So telling someone they "will hate it"? Bruh, reality check, get head out of sphincter and stop parroting like so many on steam.
dark souls 2 is a bit more "deep" though a little less polished, it's the longest game in the dark souls trilogy, though it isn't really expected of you to be familiar with the other games.
dark souls 2 and 3 do a better job of explaining mechanics to you, and have some simpler systems
all of them are pretty good starting points, dark souls 2 is a bit less polished so it might not seem too appealing at first but it can be very fun for a specific kind of player
dark souls 1 is generally considered good by most people, dark souls 2 tends to polarise people, lots of people either love it to bits or despise its existence and wish it never existed
if you decide to get dark souls 2, (though I recommend dark souls 1 first) get Scholar of the First Sin instead of base Dark Souls 2, the scholar version includes all the DLC for free, Dark souls Remastered also includes it's one DLC
I can't recommend Dark souls 3 as a starting point simply because it's 90 dollars for the base game and you need to buy the DLC separately for like another 35 dollars
though dark souls 3 is moderately long and is more polished than both, whether or not it's fun is again pretty subjective
dark souls 3 is also WAY harder than dark souls 1 or 2, both dark souls 1 and 2 sort of ease the player into the game and are fairly reasonable as long as you don't play like a raving lunatic
dark souls 3 is full of ambushes, traps and both enemies and bosses kill you in one or two hits while having several times more health than in the earlier games
you should probably have some experience before playing dark souls 3
I can't vouch for or argue against the original Dark Souls 2 as I've only played scholar but in terms of money scholar is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper, and I recommended it since I've never noticed any of the ganks or ambushes being particularly bad or unfair, especially compared to a game like dark souls 3
the original ds2 might be more enjoyable or a better experience but yeah as you said you'll get way more playtime for your buck with scholar, which seems to be a concern to OP
and scholar is still really enjoyable, like I said I can't compare it to the original but I've had a blast with scholar
while at least these games don't go on sale often they do tend to have pretty significant sales
