There are two types of "Humanity." One is the item variant, those that are in your inventory, the other variant is what's called "soft humanity." This is when you consume the Humanity item, and it's also what is used for kindling.

I consume one by mistake already, so I guess I have one soft humanity

To simplify: the numbers nearby health and stamina on the top left side of display is your current humanity level. It is used to kindle bonfires.

Humanity in your pockets is just a regular item, which may be dropped on the ground. By using this item you increase your humanity level. The higher level the more resistance/armor you have, especially against Curse. Plus your humanity level also affects on the damage of some weapons.
I have Level 1 humanity
I didn't know humanity was useful for so many things!

Thank you so much.

There are several ways to gain more humanities:
-When you're killing many human-sized enemies in an area, you can get a random soft humanity on your counter, that works up to 10 times, but only so long as the boss is alive.
-You can farm humanities by killing rats (and some other mobs in late game areas). Best farming place in early game are the rats in Depths.
- When you place your coop sign and help another player to kill his boss, you'll earn one soft humanity.

Take your time. Observe the ambushes and their behaviour. They have always the same pattern and aggro range. Go forwards step per step and figure out at which distance and which enemy starts to attack.
Get some ranged weapon like bow or throwing knifes to lure them one by one. Never rush into a new area without to pay attention to the environment. See a shiny in a room ? You can be sure there lurkes some mob behind a corner, hides in a box, hangs on a railing or drops from above.

Yeah, I have discovered (I think) that most hanging enemies are showed by rags in the walls, isn't it?

And now I have a 100% shield and the Reinforced club It is easier

Great, Great, Great, Game. But very frustrating at points haha
