why do i get invaded while resting at a bonfire

It’s not like Dark Souls 3, Where resting at a bonfire put you in a temporary “offline” mode. That’s a feature that was only ever added to DS3. In DS1 as long as you’re online and in an area where you can be invaded it doesn’t matter if you’re resting at a bonfire or not, reds can still invade you.

Yeah once I reversed hollowing to kindle a bonfire and before I could even kindle I was invaded. Which acts like an enemy is too close to the bonfire, and puts the flames out cutting off the menu.

Well that explains it. Ooalice is the mecca of PvP. That's where I got instaantly invaded before kindling.

Bonfires are not a guarantee that you're safe, but there are safe places, where you can't be invaded (and you can't invade yourself, of course). You can consider being in these places to be a "pause" in your game, if you like.

From the top of my head, places like:

- Firelink Shrine and surroundings;
- Undead Parish bonfire and surroundings (where Andre is);
- Chamber of the Princess bonfire (after Smough & Ornstein, where the big-tittied enormous lady is);
- The Abyss;
- The Kiln of the First Flame bonfire (not inside the Kiln, where you can invade and be invaded);
- Any boss arena.

These are all safe places.

A tip to know if a place is safe is to try and use multiplayer items there like White Sign Soapstone, Red Sign Soapstone, or the Red Eye Orb. If they're greyed out in that area, then you can't be invaded there.
