Why do people think Dark Souls 1 pvp is the best of the serie?
Now im no pvp expert but, compared to dark souls 2 and 3, my experienced with the online was far more enjoyable even if i would be dying a lot. It actually felt like anyone, even the idiots, had a fighting chance.

What i really like in dark souls 2 is how most weapons were really viable, really had a lot of variety, i decided to try a giant dad build and went invading, i realised how easy it was to beat people, but man. I just didnt had any fun with it, i really wanted to use weapons like mace and battleaxes in dks1 but when i tried, it felt like all the easy build would just roll over me.

It really feels like your forced to use the meta than actually use what you enjoy without having to put 10 times more time and skills into it. Also really wish there was more viability to ultras, but seems using them is just suicide :/

I love when games have strats and tech but when all the techs are around backstabs and countering them, it gets stale really fast as you just end up step dancing around people the entire time.

Because the last dark souls (3) was a roll festival and the poise was ♥♥♥♥ so you would get stun lock by daggers.
Most will tell you dark soul 2 was the best pvp because of the backstab change and the arena.

exactly, dark souls 3 was a bit boring but in group fights it could get really intense and i loved this about the game, sure daggers stunlock was insanely dumb. But still had my fun out of it, i liked using whips and crossbows, they were actually great if you comboed them togheter, or even a greatshield / crossbow build. That was my best one.

Most weapons are viable in dark souls 1 though, but dark souls one has real poise, but also has fast rolling and parrying that is hopefully more functional than the original due to latency issues. In ds1 you need to balance out your build, you need to decide whether to fast roll with light armor and focus on backstabs, whether to buff, go medium armor and be middle ground defense and poise, or go full tank.

Giant dad is nothing more than a mathematically perfect build, but perfect math does not mean perfect build, they get owned by anyone who knows how to fight them and they own people who have no clue about poise or counter a heavy handed poise monster with slow attacks.
Because the other entries in the series actually take skill, and people don't like that. "What, I can't cheese with poise while abusing instant backstabs? Garbage I say!" I feel like the overall playstyle of DS3 encouraged people to git gud at parrying though and learn proper spacing. You couldn't just walk through every attack and swing away with a GS/UGS.

The thing i REALLY struggle with dark souls 1 is how

in theory poise is a really fun and interesting mechanic, in THEORY. but...
it just gets used to spam or instantly go for backstabs, would be fine if it had even just a small windup on backstabs, so yes i could make a viable build with a weapon i like, but if the weapon itself is crap, all i can really do with it is backstab fish. Like the mace is horrible against people who have poise, it swings so slowly and its miss animation, you get instantly punished for it.

rip perseverance.

Except the problem with parrying in Ds3 is that once you were good with it you could basically make any enemy weapon obsolete. Yeah you could two hand an ultra weapon but that essentially just turns into a waiting game to see who makes the first mistake. Parrying in Ds3 also gets stupid at some points, like being able to pull off one against a rolling R1 from a 2H greataxe. How is it possible to parry a weapon that is literally being smashed into the earth.

And I wouldn't say the problem in Ds1 is poise, it's backstabs being broken.

i agree with your point except, parrying in dark souls 3 is way more dangerous to do than in dks1

take for example even the small shield, if you ♥♥♥♥ up your parry or do a partial one, you instantly lose almost all of your stamina and take a lot of damage through the shield. but in dark souls 1, you take almost no damage and stamaina damage through the shield which is ridiculous, this is why theres so many people spamming parries in dks1.

heres an example, i invaded this guy, a havel player. he had his back against a wall and he had a parrying shield. every single r1 i did he tried parrying and obviously he managed to get me since he wouldnt be getting any damage through it, he one shot me. Now, lets be real, shields are a bit broken in dark souls 1. In dark souls 3, you couldnt just run right in front of an opponent and throw a parry, if he would delay his attack for 1 milisecond, you wouuld get stunlocked in a high damage 2 hit combo. Very dangerous. I think that rolling attacks were always meant to be easily parried in all game, they are so telegraphied.
JaKeD Jun 15, 2018 @ 7:06pm
Yeah I guess, I agree with the parrying point but I was saying if you mastered it you might as well be unstoppable. Even though I don't play PvP that much, it is nice to see all the variety in Ds1. In Ds3 it essentially revolved around 3 items. A small shield, a dark lothric ss, and a chaos dagger.

Truthfully, I think comparing which souls game has the best PvP is a bad idea. Each game has their own style which can make an experience amazing or completely angering. Comparing them will pretty much turn into a stalemate.

DS1 is great, once you understand how the backstab mechanic works with latency. Backstabs don't become an issue anymore... you can punish and/or negate backstab fishers easy. I think toggles ruin a lot of "slow" weapons because if someone knows how to toggle. That build, which way back in the day served a purpose of stunning someone with your slow hits, become useless as they toggle your hit and you are stuck in the animation. Then they backstab you.

Other then that, I think ds1 pvp is the best most in depth and technical with variety. Poise is great :D

Giant dads are easy, bait em till their low on stamina (usually 3 or 4 swings of the big sword) followed by a kick and a few quick strikes. Works everytime because giant dads dont know how to do anything but swing away. Buffs like tranquil walk of peace really messes them up with all the heavy armor.

I actually want to like the pvp in dks1, im trying SO hard to enjoy it, i always loved heavy weapons and out tradding opponents and predicting when they would press r1.

But like, there was this time, i was invaded buy a guy that only tried to backstab fish, now how do you counter backstab fishing? you kick right. but heres the problem, i was using an ultra so i couldnt do anything against him...

everytime i kicked him, he could just instantly roll away since my weapon is way too slow, not only that he tried to parry my r1, this dragged on for such an insane ammount of time that he actually CRYSTALLED OUT OF MY WORLD. That made me laugh but still made me sad at the time. You can really see that some weapons just arent viable at all :\

as someone who prefers heavy slow attacks, i almost never, ever see togglers. 500+ hours and maybe 3 or 4.

preach. i wish they made ultra weapon just a tad faster and maybe just a 2 hit combo stunlock instead of an infinite one

You counter fish. strafe directly sideways and anytime they try to fish they end up in front of you with their back turned cause they step in to get around you while your just going sideways and the rest does itself. Knowing how to backstab well is the key to not getting backstabbed in 1v1.
Doma Jun 15, 2018 @ 7:13pm
yeah... i guess it comes back to backstabs, but
eh it just doesnt feel like i accomplished anything if i just kill my opponent like that
big weapons = big criticals
