the hellkite wyvern (it's motive?)
i get it from a design standpoint, that the hellkit wyvern is "there" to be an obstacle to overcome.

i ask from an in iniverse lore angle.
"why does the hellkite wyvern try to keep you from getting into the parish?"

like, it's not just "randomly" perched there. i sees you coming from far away and deliberately swoops in and tries to prevent you from getting in there. it stays perched there and continues to breathe at you again and again trying to keep you out.
and as soon as you actually get past and get in there, only then does it decide "aww screw it. . " and flies off.
so basically, it was only there as long as you are outside the parish. it is totally invested in keeping you out and once you get in, it no longer has a reason to stay there.

does it somehow know "who" you are? like it knows what you are trying to do and is actively trying to prevent it?
is it a servant of the endboss and the endboss sent it there to try and stop you?
why doesn't want you to get in there?

I still haven't beaten this yet. I'm really close, but sometimes i wonder if my character is "the bad guy" and all these things i'm killing are innocent. but then, many of them do seem clearly evil and monstrous, but then some of them are friendly to you.
but then some of the humans that seems rightous and good, then they turn on you, but then again that could be something driving them insane or maybe they see you as a monster, but then again, you "could" be a monster. . .

The fact is, Dark Souls isn't an manichean universe. Every characters have their own motives and ethics, they sometime help others and sometime commit hostile actions. But these actions don't make them a "good" or " bad" dudes (except for Petrus, seriously, I hate this guy), it's more complex. Same applies for bosses and some ennemies. They attacks for reasons that they seem to them righteous. The sad part is a lot of the fights in Dark Souls could have been avoid with discussions and explanations (more like the Priscilla one).

I always felt bad and sad after the Sif's fight. Especially after the DLC. And another thing, if you kill Solaire, no moral relativism, you are a monster. We don't deserve this glorious and sweet sunlight knight.
*Ahem* So, fun fact about Solaire...he only has 14 faith, lmao. That's not even enough to use the miracle Lightning Spear. And iirc that never goes up, but his other stats do. He's basically a 99 Cents Store paladin (that example might be lost on some of you though because 99 Cents Store is an American thing, and idk if those stores even exist anymore).

Everyone seems to love Solaire, and I usually like the idea of Paladin type characters in fantasy rpg's, but Solaire is kind of pathetic. I know that he is supposed to be the underdog type character that people want to root for, but I don't really care for that hard-working underdog trope in a fantasy game.

Here's how I found out about Solaire only having 14 faith: https://twitter.com/king_bore_haha/status/1431416444982480899?s=20&t=vEjrG6LDF8RnVUstB269vQ

the batwing demons that fly you to anor londo, kinda doesn't make sense to me, because why are all the other ones hostile? why only those 2 seem to be friendly and want to "help" you get there?
I mean, i suppose, demons "could" be like humans, where they had good and bad people , but i dunno. most games present monsters as being all the same as any other member of their species, as in, all of them want to kill you
I agree. I really wish there was some lore explaining why the first Batwing Demons you meet are basically your taxi service to and from Anor Londo, but then the rest screech and attack the crap out of you. At least if it could be like they were driven insane or corrupted by some magical presence that made them aggro to beings they considered intruders.

These batwings demons are servants of gods. You may assume one god wants chosen undeads to go in Arnor Londo . The others batwings demons one are here to see if the intruder is worth

i agree, solaire seems kind of weak. it's a struggle to keep him from dying when he helps you against a boss.
you can summon him to help with the gaping maw dragon and he just gets crushed by it. he helps, as a distraction, but you still need to be able to DPS that thing down before it kills him.

compare him to maneater mildred, who just tanks Quelaag as an absolute meatshield, despite being clad in nothing but a burlap bikini or witch beatrice who totally nukes whatever she shoots at. . when she actually decides to shoot at it. .

meanwhile, yeah, the fanboism for Solaire is real.
check out "Souls Logic" on VLDL YT channel, and Ben just goes full on hyperfan mode when Solaire appears to help him with a boss and then they go in and Solaire just 1 shots the boss, while Ben is still trying to figure out how to get in position and that never actually happens in the actual game. . .(yes, i know they are taking artistic licence there) , so yeah, people seem to think Solaire is a badass, but he's really a confused and lost soul. he turned into an undead, just like you and now he's searching for his own "personal sun", whatever that means. .
you have to do a bunch of roundabout stuff, requiring intimate knowledge of the game and a bit of sequence breaking just to "save" solaire at the end of the game. . .

Yup. All very true. I'll try and check out that video (Souls Logic) a little later. I've never heard of that that let alone seen that before.

I always thought it was ridiculous and weird that you had to join the Chaos Servant covenant and get to Rank 2 just to save Solaire (or apparently kill the Sunlight Bug with poison mist or toxic mist through that big door, but I bet you that means you lose out on that Sunlight Maggot (helmet thing) if you kill it that way.
Icedfate 7/ago./2022 às 1:30
yeah, i didn't "cheese" it through the door, because actually, according to the wiki, once you get to chaos servant +2 from donating the 30 humanity and open the shortcut, it stays open for all the future NG+ playthroughs. (you don't have to join again and give humanity)(also there's a steam achiev that i have to get every pyromancy in the game, so i had to do it anyway)

the information is kind of confusing. I opened the shorcut, got the maggot, killed all 9 bugs and then the wiki says he should appear there, but he didn't appear there

and i'm running around wondering if i should go ahead and fight the firesage or not because they said if you go in there before doing the maggot then you screw it up. . .but then another souce says as long as you got the maggot you are okay, so i killed the firesage and the centipede and went back to the shortcut and he was there looking depressed. . yay(?).. .i think i did it right.

then the wiki says he should appear beside the bonfire AFTER the centipede demon but i go there and he's not there. he's still at the shortcut.
now, they say that if i did it wrong, he would have had the maggot on his head and he would be hostile, so i guess i did it right.

I dunno what i "get" for it though, except i can summon him to help with the endboss?

as for the VLDL video, that's short for "Viva La Dirt League" channel and they do live action video game parodies .
there's a 20 episode series called "souls logic" parodying dark souls and then they also did Red Dead and PubG nd then have a series called "epic npc man" about self aware npcs in a VR MMORPG are currently doing dead by daylight and they also did some other series called "bored" that was about the employees of a computer and electronics store.

Yup. You did Solaire's quest right. It's not worth it imo though. Being able to summon him for the final boss is the only "reward" :steamfacepalm:, lol.

Oh cool. Thanks for explaining that. I'll make sure to check that channel and those parodies out. Btw I normally would have typed out a longer reply but it's past 2am for me and I need to get some sleep.

Shunning other comments, the hellkites in the world, perhaps seeing your are not fully hollow, would want to stop you since it was humans who brought the existence of dragons to a stop.

But if its defending the undead parish castle rather than explicitly going after you, then perhaps it is devoted to gwyn and wants to stop anyone from ringing the bell.

Both are opposing possibilities, since gwyn did kill off the dragons, but who knows, maybe it swore loyalty or maybe it just hates the undead. Or maybe its like any animal defending its territory for no reason. I don't know though, I assumed you may have googled it before and found nothing, so it really may be up to interpretation

To fully answer to your question about the wyvern you have also to dig down in the lore of DS3. After you beat a certain boss there are some implications that will clarify better why the wyvern is there
Icedfate 7/ago./2022 às 18:22
yeah, there are a lot of hidden lore things that you have to kind of figure out for your self. . .like a certain boss in this game is transgender.

"this game is woke trash!"
Shreddy 7/ago./2022 às 18:33
I don’t think they are a transvestite since it’s a monster with a half snake body, I realise there are Reddit threads that claim otherwise but well that’s Reddit for you. I think people complain about games being “woke trash” because they push irrelevant political narratives at the expense of quality, not because there are monsters that dress strangely.
Icedfate 7/ago./2022 às 18:49
the wiki says Gwyndolin is a male that was raised as a female. the boss looks "female" , but then again, i guess we shouldn't be trying to "assume" people's gender? especially the genders of nonhuman entities?
maybe he's more like Angela from Sleepaway Camp, i dunno.

for the record, i was making a joke at certain people's expense that every time a game has some sort of glbt character in it, no matter how minor they are, like they could just be an npc vendor that barely has a backstory and someone will be on the forum crying about the "woke agenda"

very often there is no expense of quality in the gaming sphere for development when it comes to adding these things. Thats just misinformation generally by a far-right social media audience trying to get attention and clicks. Genuinely, when doing gamedev, its one of those things that will take up near 0% of your quality or energy.
Majorita 8/mar./2024 às 11:15
It's not a WYVERN.
Icedfate 8/mar./2024 às 16:43
that's what it's called in the lore.
its literal name is "HELLKITE WYVERN" or sometimes "bridge wyvern"
and also, it's not a dragon. a wyvern has 2 legs and 2 wings for a total of 4 limbs, while a dragon has 2 back legs, 2 front leg/arms and 2 wings for a total of 6 limbs.

unless you're trying to use dnd logic, where a wyvern has a scorpion tail and yeah, in that case, it's not a dnd wyvern.
but this is dark souls, not dungeons and dragons
