a lot of the basic weapons are okay, if not pretty good. the longsword, though worse than the balder side sword, is a serviceable weapon to the endgame for certain builds (the shortsword admittedly sucks). the first time i beat the gargoyles it was with a +5 battle axe i picked up off a hollow warrior.
Whatever you like. I just like to use the best weapons I have access to, upgrade them early as much as I can and I am really big fan of red tearstone ring, power within and weapon buffs, I just like to jump into the boss area and murder the boss. I can easily one shot Capra Demon for instance whilst people here on forums sometimes complain he's hard. No, he's not, you are just playing it wrong or you are not making a good use of your resources, that's what I would answer. Whatever, you can beat the game just using your fists whatever way you like, but don't complain it's hard.
The normal weapons you found in early game are enough, like Claymore, Reinforced Club, Battle Axe, Longsword....., but take your time to farm some souls / shards and UPGRADE your weapon.
Even if you have a BSS +5, you can't just rush in and mow them down. Pick your spots and keep on the defensive otherwise (shield works a treat with just one of them up, rolling/dodging is safer when both are active). When one is up, try to always hit from the back, trading blows is a mug's game, and getting the tail off will cramp their style.
When the second one is up, take a breath. It's about situational awareness and separating them. Be patient. Both you and the boss have a set amount of HP and as long as theirs are going down and yours aren't, you're winning.
Note that all of these are also advice for fighting Ornstein and Smough later - in fact, this is in a sense a training fight for that one, which is arguably the hardest in the (non-DLC) game to solo.
whoa, captain dark souls, tone it down. The guy asked for advice, not whether you're able to one shot Capra Demon or not. He stated he's new to DS1 and you talk about optimizing stuff... It's like trying to explain sprinting to a newborn.
Most people won't use buffs and whatnot until they feel comfortable with a boss. Why waste resources if you haven't even learned the attack patterns? First get a feel of the game/area/boss. Get a weapon you're comfortable with, make mistakes so that you find out what needs improving.
He doesn't even have a pyromancy flame yet. What power within are you on about? Red tearstone? not there yet, you mega warrior you! Weapon buffs? What, you think 50 extra damage is going to win him this fight?
And regarding Capra demon, people aren't in a tizzy about the boss itself. The arena is the reason for frustration. Yeah, on your 50th run ofc it's going to be a meh encounter but on your first go, when you get smacked before you're even able to see what's in front of you? Excuse the rest of us for not being da behstehst eva! In my first ever attempt I got clipped in a wall and couldn't do ♥♥♥♥ but I guess power within and a lightning buff would've won that battle for me, amirite :>? Or should I uninstall the game because my dodge wasn't pure perfection?
This weapon is very good at helping you win this boss fight. Once you do win, you unlock Undead Parish and later you meet Andre the Blacksmith.
You want to make sure that after you get the Sword from the dragon's tail that you upgrade it with Dragon Scales. Make sure you buy the Weapon Upgrade toolkit from Andre the Blacksmith in the Undead Parish in case you accidentally kill him so that you have access to upgrading your weapons at a bonfire and not always using Andre.
