Is this the best version of the game?
I already have the Prepare to Die Edition. I just want to get the best version of this game regardless of the price.

I know that this version has 60 fps with no physics bugs and native ultrawide, but is there anything that this remastered version does worse? I see some Youtube videos that show lighting downgrades (especially for armour), but some say that that is not true and that their brightness is set too high, but I have no way to verify.

Personally, I run DSFix at 30 fps to avoid physics glitches, so I am probably at a disadvantage in the PVP for the PTDE anyhow.

Just want to get some thoughts as I'm going back and forth about picking this up.

In my opinion, it is not worth it if you own the original PTDE and you mostly play PvE and don't care about multiplayer. Graphics (in my opinion) do look better in the Remastered and its nice to not have to disable 60 fps to fix physics glitches. The Remastered in my opinion is great for people who have never played the original. Maybe pick it up for less than $10 since you own the original (again if you're into multiplayer).

But one thing you can't do in the Remastered is this: https://youtu.be/n8FVqGfdqNE

PTDE is awesome just for that.

Hope this helps!

Two things about the Remastered version that got me to move away from the PTDE:

(1) Support for 60 FPS without using DSFix.

(2) Quality of life improvement such as consuming multiple copies of something like souls or Humanities. Giving 30 Humanities to the Fair Lady is much, much faster now. So is giving a bunch of covenant items at the respective site, e.g. Souvenir of Reprisal and Eye of Death.

New warpable bonfire in the catacombs, better online functionality, no animation delay with 60 fps, texture improvements, and the majority of the playerbase has already migrated to DSR, so you need it if you want to actually find players.

Modded PTDE looks so much better than DSR, and unless you have a potato you should be getting 60 fps with PTDE using DSFix. If memory serves you should lock fps to just a fraction below 60, like 59.7 or something like that (it has been a few years since PTDE for me).

That said, DSR has much better KBM functionality out of the box. DSR is the future of this 'first in the series' unless you only want to play offline, but that gets boring fast. Others have also said additional positives for the remastered.

It's a great game, people whinge way too much, but agree how it was a cash grab and split the community. Then again DS2 and DS2 SotFS set the stage already so no real surprise.

I do not regret picking up DSR with my 50% PTDE bonus off the price, perhaps you do not know you get that discount...?

On a technical level, absolutely. Native 60FPS, native high res & ultrawide support, native PS4 controller support with PS4 button prompts, good KB&M support, Blighttown, Forest and Demon Ruins framerates not in the single digits and decent particle effects (PtdE Pyro Flame is just an orange circle). There also are a few QoL improvements.

It still has most of the glitches though, which kinda sucks. At least from a PvP standpoint. Also, invaders can chug Estus now, which is just dumb, since they already have a huge advantage over lone hosts. There's also weapon-level matchmaking in DS:R, but doesn't really do anything to prevent twinks, instead only reduces co-op action. Some don't like the higher contrast lighting either. Also, the 60FPS is a hard cap. It can't go high, but lower is also not possible, without making the game unplayable, because lower framerates reduce the gamespeed. Paired with the removal of the original, this kills all legacy support.

Yeah, I was one of the people who got burned during the DS2 -> SotFS transition. Was not happy about that...

I know there is a discount on the remastered version. Honestly, I would pay $10 or so for it. I suppose I would be inclined to just get it at $20 if it were a straight upgrade, but with some people saying the remastered is worse in some ways, idk...

Silly me only read the title again. I need to stop doing that.

Then it's honestly not worth it. DS:R is the definitive version, but not a big enough improvement over PtdE, especially if you consider, that FromSoft never bothered to properly fix it themselves, but instead charge money for a proper fix.

The physics glitches from PtdE at higher framerates aren't too big of a deal, if you don't go higher than 60. Only affects sliding down ladders (only the one at Undead Parish near the rats consistently), slopes and jumps. I always play at 58FPS capped and use the "toggle framerate cap"-key (BACKSPACE-key by default), to switch between 58 and 30FPS when walking near slopes, where you can slip off at higher framerates (Firelink buttress, Crystal Caves), before a jump or sliding down the ladder leading to lower Undead Burg, which i've fallen through the floor once.

I originally bought the remastered on PS4 and initially I felt mostly annoyed, as they changed for example the style of bonfires and introduced some changes I did not agree with such as the ability to switch covenants like they were nothing. The renders used for marketing made me expect more improvements in graphics quality, although that would be more akin to a remake.

However, after I tried to play the original PTDE on Steam it took only five minutes before I bought the Remastered on PC as well. The shaders and lightning look much much smoother, not to mention the game runs 60fps without bugs. Some of quality of life improvements as well.

Each to their own, but after doing that side-by-side comparison the purchase was a no-brainer for me personally, as I still regularly played Dark Souls at that point and as PTDE-owner I got 50% discount.

1) Release the PC port completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up 2) Never patch the bugs 3) Wait a few years and charge full price for the patch 4) ??? 5) Profit
