Talk to NPCs
Because it forces you to actually think about your build, rather than just slapping random items on.
If you're going in a direction, then that's the correct direction to go. If you find enemies you can't fight effectively, instead consider running away, going a different direction, and coming back later. This game was made to be explored.
2 Rings because rings are extremely strong in DS1. With some practice there's a ring in this game that basically boosts your damage with thrusting weapons by 40%. There's nothing even remotely similar to that in the subsequent games. I'll be honest, I do like having more, less consequential rings since I feel I get a better granularity in my character customization, but in this game 2 rings makes sense.
There's pretty much the exact same kind of indication you'll find in the other two: you talk to people, they gave you hints at where to go, plus you fight enemies, you assess if they are too strong for now, or seems like the right level
DS2 and DS3 are never more explicit in that regard, it's just that the world layout descrived before is very linear, so less chance of taking a wrong path
Just because... mechanically speaking, 2 or 4 makes no difference at all, you still have 'n' passive equip slots, it's just balanced differently
...DS3 is definitely amazing except for its fightining systtem which is really poor (especially fo PvP)
ehh the first 50% are good but the rest isn't really that fantastic, at times even just stupidly bad
I do wish DS1 didn't require a ring slot for covenent action though.
