Report a translation problem
I can't say I like it as much as ds3, but it's still a solid game. I've played and finished far worse games.
I know for a fact I'd hate replaying it after 100%'ing DS3

I never had a problem with the environment not being telling enough though - in fact, I liked this game's level design more than DS3 for the most part.
Had the same problem like this guy when playin DS3 and my way to "get into" was adapting to his playstyle which meant no blocking but instead dodging and bein super aggressive. Noticed very fast, this wasn't how I like to play a souls game and stopped playin.
I would recomend you do the same for DS1. Play a slow character with always shield up, no backstabbing/parrying and see if its fun for you. If not, maybe better watch a lets-play, if you are interested in the "details" of the game like story, npcs, bosses,...
