Demons Great Hammer - Useless?

So I'm relatively new to this game, I wound up looking for advice on starting kit because idfk and all the reccommendations were Black Bombs to kill the Asylum Demon on first encounter for a sweet powerful weapon.

Well I did that, and huzzah, big fat hammer with a whopping 138 damage.

Only....not really, since apparently you need 31/41 odd strength to use it and without that I just sorta bonk my foes for a feeble 3 damage.

And on top of that it's not that powerful? The undead merchant in sells a spiked club that deals 97 damage for barely anything and it's wieldable. I can't imagine by the time I've gotten enough souls to hit 41 strength that a 138damage club will be the best thing around.

Am I missing something? I'm assuming I am but...idk?

It's garbage weapon.
You can upgrade it to do more dmg but it is outclassed by Great Club.
If you want OP starter weapon and don't want to rely on rng you should try going for Gravelord Sword

Look up the Drake Sword cheese, it's OP until Anor Londo. Also grab the Zweihander in the graveyard, you don't need to fight the skeletons to get it.
