Remaster or Prepare to die edition?
So I've been reading the reviews, and a lot of them agree that this is a terrible remaster. Does that make this version bad though? I've been thinking about getting into the Dark Souls series, and I'm trying do determine whether I should just buy the remaster or find a key for the Prepare to Die edition. Some help would be appreciated!

What problems? I've been using DSFix for years, you just drag and drop the files into the data folder and enable them in the .ini file. Boom, instant 60fps, and the option for better graphics.

Remastered has better graphics, 60 FPS native, resolution scaling native, a bonfire by Vamos, and not nearly as many as connection issues. This is definitely the definitive version of DS1.

There's also a multitude of bugs not even addressed, such as the infinite backstabbing, their dedicated servers are ONLY fro matching and not for the entire invasion (so you get all the same laggy and connectivity issues with PvP as you did before), The bonfire by Vamos is useless without teleportation unlocked via Lord Vessel or you're just stuck down there, the graphics in many areas have been dulled and look ugly as hell (check out the waterfall by the hyrda, or the Elite Knight armor), weird lighting transitions and issues, your limbs and joints all break when you dodge roll and I don't even know how you mess that up...

It's honestly one of the laziest remasters you could ever find, and they had the nerve to charge people $40 to upgrade to it, when it should have EASILY been free. This is not definitive in the slightest...it's a cash grab, made worse because they dropped the old version and forced everyone to buy the new one, like George Lucas and the Star Wars Special Edition nonsense.

At least networking works in DS: Remastered. Many users have always had a disgustingly difficult time getting summoned on the original. Not to mention remastered has a much higher player base now with usually twice as many players, so multiplayer on the original isn't exactly booming. The textures look far more crisp at 4k in remaster, and you don't have to deal with that perpetual middle of the screen screen tear introduced on many, many monitors using dsfix.

If you don't have DS at all, it's utterly senseless to buy Prepare to Die edition. It has low res textures and requires dsfix, 30FPS cap without dsfix (and bugs happen like sliding through the world at 60 FPS). Even with the frame rate uncapped to 60, it's not nearly as smooth moving as remaster.

I agree it should have been free, but it WAS only US $20 for people who already owned Prepare To Die Edition when it launched. The games bugs haven't been fixed, but the engine has been modified enough to run well at 4k @ 60fps. It also annoys me that (just like scholar of the first sin), remaster has split the community in half into two different versions of the game. But it is what it is, just get remaster if you have to choose.

The fact of the matter is this: there's no sense in a new player buying the original Dark Souls, even if it was possible to do so. If you already own PTDE, yeah that's fine, don't buy the remaster. But OP doesn't have PTDE, so he should definitely buy the remaster.

I forgot to mention everyone's favorite DSFIX bug, leaving the bonfire too quickly causing the game to get stuck. That one's always fun!

"PTDE + Dsfix > Remaster" is just plain nonsense.

^ this, ladders not working, 60 FPS causing animations to happen too quickly, connection issues, the list goes on.

Also if you own Prepared to Die edition on steam you get a 50 percent discount off Remastered. This stacks with any other sales that steam may have ongoing. I really regret not getting the game on the last steam deal but will be sure to do so for the next one.

That said Prepared to Die is only available through key resellers these days at an inflated price due to being taken off the market. I was lucky in that i got prepared to die as part of a cheap bandai namco bundle on humble bundle store around 2015 i think.

I can only speak for myself. It was half off for me, it runs a lot smoother then the old version even with the fix. Keyboard controls seem a lot nicer, but I still use a gamepad. It seems darker as well which isn't the end of the world. Plus since I've played a bit of dark souls over the past few years, and bought it on multiple systems I pretty much got it for the hell of it to fill out the collection. If you like dark souls, but aren't one of the old time gamers who love the old one, which I can't blame them, you should enjoy it. But if you liked the old version, think of it as a patch that changes a lot of little things and makes it a little bit different with minor tweaks. Then you may not like it. Cause sure some things are fixed and tweaked, but because of that it's not the same old game ya fell in love with.... it's just a little off.

Objectively the remaster is great because it fixed issues and made the game run more smoothly while keeping the game intact.

Subjectively people will always ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan about the strangest things.

There's a lot of small visual issues present in the Remaster, but unless you plan on getting into "higher tier" PvP, then the Remaster is just fine for the most part and probably the better way to play. The big issues really only come into play during PvP so you probably will never even notice them otherwise.

Dark Souls Remastered runs better, even when compared to DSfix, and PTDE is no longer available on the store.

Remaster all the way. Mods can't improve Frame rates properly, it's just a smoother experience.

Sadly, I would say a new player should go with the Remastered today.
It's much smoother and the online part is more active.
The original looks much better though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCy5hO6i5eM

Prepare to Die. Remaster devs abandoned this game and deleted their link to the support site
