Basically your weapon is going through 2 defenses, which is why it is better to have more damage for one element than the other.

Split damage doesn't chip shields at all. You'd be better off backstabbing and riposting, Instead of the stuff you do. Also just pure physical tends to do more after the nerfs to Chaos & Lightning in PTDE. (They were broken pre-nerf)
