Ya know, just one of the many Dark Souls 1 exclusive online interaction things that never ever appeared in any of the other games.
(Just like things like being able to see where people died through curse, getting an extra estus when someone kindles their bonfire with you being near it, the bells obviously, things like that)
I always did like the bells thing, hearing them and I never looked it up but I assumed it meant someone else had just done that.
Bells, Vagrants, seeing other peoples cursed bodies, getting Estus from bonfires when others kindle it, all of those things are pretty much just in Dark Souls 1. In later games, the online interaction outside of invasions was reduced to just player ghosts / phantoms visible in your world, messages and bloodstains.
