I don't know why the OP dislikes it though... I like this place
They ran out of time so thats why the area is so big and empty and there is almost nothing there, same with bed of chaos, it was supposed to be a crawling bug boss with a core you needed to whack but it never got done.
The animations for it are in the game unused.
I read about this a long long time ago by the way when questions were asked about it on 360 and why it seemed so out of place.
It's not like we didn't have nice open areas in DS1 like Darkroot Garden, rven in Blighttown you have more things to do and explore.
Ds1 is in general unfinished. There is a fully city part that you can see from Firelink Shrine if you look down. It has streets, stairs and is fully textured. Same with New Londo Ruins, that place was supposed to be 3-4 time bigger, you can see it if you drain the water.
