ps4 controller issue

I keep having a problem where my ps4 controller cannot control the actual game but I can still use it to navigate the steam menus. if I restart my PC it fixes it, but surely there is an easier way. Has anyone else had this issue and a simple fix?

Seems like the game 'lost communication' with said controller and cuts out, permanently for the game session.

You have to exit and open the game to be able to play with said controller again.

If you play via wires, even the connection popping off for a bit can cut the game's connection to the controller.

No, this isn't what is happening. Even if I reset steam and close all of its processes and put in the controller before hand it is not responsive in game. It's not a hadware issue the wires are perfectly fine the controller works it just stops responding specifically to the game itself.

Update for future people with this issue:

I changed my steam client to the beta version and it's working fine now. I don't even need to use big picture mode anymore.

to do this go to steam, settings, account, betas, steam beta, and update

What OS are you using? I am having the same issue with PS4 controller. Game won't recognize it but works fine in Steam big picture. I'm using windows 7, maybe that is a problem?

I use ps4 controller too, had some issues to get it working, do not use ps4 support mode in big picture. Seems to conflict with W10 automaticly installing xbox drivers if you reconnect a controller.

Using windows 7 and DS4, no problems at all. I can even change controls from controller to m&k on the fly, as well as I don't have to restart or reboot anything.
Are you trying to connect through bluetooth or usb? I think that might make a difference.

Windows 10 automaticly installs xbox drivers wich causes conflicts with exlusive mode. You have to block this by installing some (shady?) mod.

I'm using USB, I just redownloaded DS4Windows and these are my settings to get the controller to partially work, but not playable yet. Steam Beta Participation, Use the Big Picture Overlay is UNCHECKED, In Controller Settings I have Xbox Config Support selected and Steam recognizes my controller as a 360 controller. DS4 windows is default settings, DS Edit Steam Controller config is set to WASD configuration, I have tried generic gamepad config did not work. DS remastered is all default key settings. My dpad does not work, the menu thinks I'm pressing UP constantly and won't let me scroll down in menus, joysticks and face buttons work, I have

I started running my games as admin and it helps.

I'm on windows 10

not using any third party software
