Until you clear Anor Londo, Don't go into the demon ruins any farther than beating Ceasless Disgarge and cooling off the lava.
unless you feel comfortable getting past 7 carpa demons on a narrow walkway if you use the bonfire farther down in there.
In the room with a wall you can break down, you can get to a trap door that will drop you right by the switch you need to pull to flip the bridge, thankfully on the far side of it, toward the exit of Firelink Shrine.
It's a serious uphill battle, though, past skeleton archers, a giant skeleton, and climbing two well-hidden ladders to get to the necromancer keeping the skellies alive.
