Don't go around killing people willy-nilly. In Dark Souls killing someone or giving the wrong answer may affect the whole rest of your playthrough.

Are you sure you didn't get it when you killed him? If not, then it may be in a chest in firelink shrine. I think that chest has all important items you missed/forgot to pick up.
