Are you saying that for example reinforced club is as good as BKH ? (I actually played through the whole game with a reinforced club during my first time and it was kinda harsh).
The higher str weapons are becuase they pancake things and do great damage.
It has 2 things, a Zweihander and poise.
It's difficult to use in PvP due to how slow it is and it's massive weight, but it can crush anything very quickly
1) Most importantly, if you want to do decent damage, go with weapons that only do 1 type of damage (basically, go pure physical)
2a) If you want to use faster hitting/dex weapons:
Use weapons that are buffable - sunlight/moonlight blade, crystal magic weapon are your best choices. Even a simple dagger is viable, but if you want to kill bosses in a reasonable amount of time, this is necessary. To kill normal enemies without using buffs, go for criticals/bleed.
2b) If you want to use slower, heavier hitting weapons:
Scaling will eventually outshine weapons that are OP at first. Claymore will do more damage than BKS (not to mention it has much better moveset), Zweihander will do more damage than BKGS, etc. On TOP of that, those weapons are also buffable, making them far more viable for end-game.
All that said, this game is easy. IMO, the most garbage weapon in NG+6 on a high level character you can use is the Astora straight sword. It simply deals pitiful damage, having about 100 less AR than a divine longsword and being an unbuffable split-damage weapon. Only way I beat 4 kings (dps race boss) with that was using power within. But even then, I managed to beat them. And rest of the game is fine, if you have a bit of patience.
