Hellkite Dragon Glitch?

I'm on NG+3 and I was fighting the Red Dragon on the bridge by shooting an arrow to lure him down, hit him once and retreat to the stairs when he would breathe fire. The Dragon would fly back on top of the Sunlight Altar, put his wings over his face and his HP would recover to about 3/4 full. Did anyone else experience this?

He's healing, you can negate that by just shooting him down, rushing and hitting his head once or twice, and run down the stairs. He doesn't have time to heal if you just rinse and repeat that
