Early Game Dex Weapon?
I've chosen thief and gotten up to the undead parish (firelink shrine checkpoint) and this knife I have is completely useless in any situation other than 1v1ing smaller enemies. Is their any better weapon to get at this point that actually scales with dex?

You can imagine one of those brain charts to go with this.

Uchigitana, Kill the vendor in Undead Burg.

Uchigitana also applies bleed, very good dex weapon early. I used it until I got my Fury Sword.

You can get the weapons from the shopkeep in the undead burg from the merchant there, or if you want a katana try attacking

Or you could be dirty and not need a stat investment and get a jagged ghost blade.
Problem: good luck hitting a ghost without the item or curse status.

The undead merchant in the parish sells both the scimitar and rapier for like, 600 souls if I remember.
Though, honestly this early game, focusing on your scaling isn't terribly important. Just use a hand axe you've picked up or something until you either get to upgrade weapons, or find non-starter gear.
I picked the wanderer class to begin with, which has high dex and the broadsword still is one of the better weapons pre-gargoyle

And if you +5 Uchigitana, after kiling Quelagg and obtaining her soul, you can go to Anor Londo talk to the giant blacksmith, and you can transform it into Chaos Blade.

Ye but you get two transient curses in that area fairly early that let you hit them and generally the strategy is to use those to get a ghost blade imo lol.

You can run past the titanite demon below Andre, run past (or carefully go through) the dark root garden until you find the Partizan

Another spear you can find early on is the Winged spear, which is in the fire link graveyard. Just be careful as you're not supposed to fight the skeletons until later

not every new player can deal with ghosts well.
so for them it'd be easy to lose.

Kill the undead vendor in that area, as others say. That katana is easily one of the best dex weapons in the game.

True though that is the general strategy even in normal progression unless you are just running through.

Awww yeah! Scimitar and Falchion were my first playthrough (and many of my Demon's Souls playthroughs). I love the animation.

Before you (potentially) kill the undead vendor make sure you buy a few important items from him. Also the heater shield is the only small shield in the game that has 100% physical block. It's great if you want to stay light but be able to negate all physical damage (to an extent as it has less stability than a medium shield w/ 100% physical block).

Also if you don't mind farming you can farm the Balder Knights for the Balder Side Sword. It's a really good dex weapon. It has B scaling in dex by default and has a great moveset (slash attack r1's and thrust attacks r2's for fight in narrow hallways). I got one by accident the yesterday in Dark Souls 1 PPTDE but they're rare so it could take awhile to get one. If you have 10 humanity you will have very decent item find but that's not an easy thing to get now since firekeeper soul duping has been patched out.
