PSA REGARDING COVENANTS

Switching covenants at a bonfire WILL halve your offerings and lower rank. Tested by reaching Chaos Servant+2, switching to sunbro, then switching back to chaos servant. Am now Chaos Servant+1. Presumably this also counts as betrayal and makes relevant NPCS hostile to the player. DO NOT SWITCH COVENANTS UNLESS YOU ARE PLANNING ON STAYING IN THEM.

EDIT: REGARDING THE FOREST HUNTERS: You can leave the forest hunters and rejoin WITHOUT fear of retribution. When you are not in the covenant YOU MUST NOT ATTACK THE COVENANT NPCS! IF YOU DO THIS, UPON REJOINING COVENANT AT THE BONFIRE IT INSTANTLY REMOVES YOU FROM THE COVENANT AND REMOVES IT FROM THE LIST OF COVENANTS! However, as long as you do not attack the NPCS you may rejoin safely. Presumably this applies to any similar covenant scenarios I.E. Petrus and the Way of White. Forest hunters WILL be hostile until you rejoin. More testing required regarding Darkmoons and Darkwraith.

More edit: You can leave darkwraith and rejoin as desired it seems. Probably best not to talk to kaathe when not in covenant.

Leaving a covenant should never accumulate sin - that's only for killing NPCs, and invading players. I always go Sunlight early, then switch to Chaos Servant temporarily, then back to Sunlight - the only effect is the halving of offerings and the reduction of covenant rank to match it.

EDIT: I also don't offer any sunlight medals for the first stint - just join to get the miracle, and start collecting medals. I then give all offerings after I switch back from Chaos Servant.

How do you leave a covenant without lowering your rank? Do you have to go back to the covenant NPC?

search oswald the pardonner, adn talk to him. he can also free you of your sins (and your sins carry through NG cycle). sin too much and you will face the judgement of the darkmoon blades.
