This was the only time I could, since the games themselves decide whether to play a gamepad, or not =)
I run the game as administrator and it seems to work for me. the only downside is that external keybinds (like if you use push-to-talk for discord) will not work while dark souls has window focus.
I also noticed it worked after restarting my computer but I'd rather not have to resort to that if I can avoid it.
If none of this works there's one final thing you can do that I know works. Install a software that can emulate a 360 controller from any controller. Then setup your controller buttons on the xbone to the 360. Bam 3rd party controller support.
