Ordeals and how to prepare for them
OK either I just REALLY suck at the game, or the ordeals are a tiny bit too overpowered.
I already have a hard enough time suppressing stuff but when I do I usually lose all my staff, luckily they break out very often.

Ordeals however are a guaranteed loss for me unless its red dawn, if its anything else I may as well just reset the game. Is there anyway to counter the others easily? My staff just get either swarmed and butchered, or just destroyed/made insane.

amber dawn you can just avoid or attack it with ranged weapons since melee rarely hits, green dawn you can overwhelm and just keep sending employees back to heal just make sure it doesn't kill anyone since it does a ton of aoe damage if it does, and violet doesn't do much damage so you just need a bit of health/high black armor but you need to kill it quick otherwise it causes a lot of problems. when you get used to them they'll almost never kill anyone unless you accidently left one employee in the room with them. later ordeals can be much trickier to deal with though, especially violet noon... if you don't know what it does you're gonna lose a lot of people.

If we're talking about Dawn ordeals here. Use LOB points to upgrade all agents to, at least, level 2 fortitude/prudence. Quality over quantity.

Green and amber, don't put you on timer. Before triggering them, you can assemble all agents in one big deathball and clear them one by one, retreating for healing as needed.
If you're using prudence 1 agents, they can't stand to wittness execution, performed by green. Don't send them in before all clerks in the room are dead.

Purple does put you on timer, but all they do: is to explode for 15-20 white damage and upset one abnormality per explosion. If you don't have enough firepower to destroy them all, fight one or don't fight at all, and just deal with escapes they caused.

First Violet Noon... your agents will get squashed).

For dawn ordeals you should wait until you have the third department before you attempt to combat them. Send some decently leveled agents with the right type of damage and they will drop like flies. Restart if you get to midnight. You won't make it.

The Dawn ordeals are fairly easy once you get some good equip and level your agents to rank 2 hp/mp. Try and do as many justice type actions as you can to level that up normally, as it's really expensive to force level. (Not sure why it's that way tbh)

I ignore ordeals all together unless I have Big Bird or Mountain of Smilling Bodies

OK, now i know I'm missing something - how does one control the employees in the hallways at all? I can see in videos other people clicking on them and getting a [move] box, but I can't even seem to get that, let alone send them to do anything.

I'm also getting wiped out in every dawn, and the only thing I can figure out to do to keep anyone alive is try and send them to abnormalities via clear corridors, and then try to re-route or abort the trip if it's a certain death abnormality.

Not sure quite what you meant, Paulo, but I'll keep trying.

A related question - there's a toolbar I seem to be missing at the bottom of the screen - someone pointed out I should be using "bullets" and "shields"? They are described in the manual, and I see it on screen for some youtube players, but I don't seem to have them - does the toolbar show up at some point later in the game?

yes bullets are after you unlock the middle layer, by selecting the employers i mean use the left click of the mouse and use it to select your employers so you can control them
