Took me years and many play throughs to know that Luck Rings did anything for example. There is a website out there where I found that someone had gone through and tried to catalog the effects of every items in hard terms (like do the leggings of clumsiness have an effect? and if so how badly, and do cursed items really have a downside? etc)
I'll try and find it in my search history and post a link.
EDIT: and to answer one of your questions :) Attacks per round are determined by that weapons skill. There are a few pitfalls however! For example, for years I thought 2 Handed Skill affected Williams ability with the Greatsword. It doesn't! That is bladed. 2 Handed is essentially only for Staffs. Same with Solon and Warhammers. Those are Blunt, not 2 Handed, despite the fact they are 2 Handed weapons.
Damage also goes up with skill, although is also affected by weapon (right click on a weapon in the inventory screen, it gives you the max damage done, although even this is a bit...flexible. Using Slayerbane against the undead for example...)
Ty for the attacks per round part, wondered why he was so useless. I saw Williams Attack Rating actually go up with 2h skill though and nothing with bladed so maybe its a combo of both?
