Foreword: I really hate that Iron Maiden sued to get the name of this game changed. The game stars a futuristic tough valkyrie, She deserves to be addressed as such.

The short: It's fun, ramps up in difficulty quickly, some levels are a breeze, some are really difficult. Shelly Harrison is as tough as Duke. Maybe tougher. The starter pistol, Loverboy (the references and memes never stop) is arguably the best gun in the game. It's on e of those guns that if I owned a collection of guns to help me save the world, Loverboy would be in there.

The one-liners are ok. She's sassy, without being annoying or overly offensive. She's a professional, afterall. But a valkyrie's work is never done. It's time to choose which of the gym-wipes on the map need to die today. There's too many secrets! Lots of guns. I loved the wholesome easter eggs alot. SOmetimes, the familes of the devs are just as important as the things they love, because afterall, the game is a labor of love, showcasing all the people and things that inspire them to make awesome stuff.

Ion Fury is a first-person shooter, in the vein of Duke Nukem 3D or Doom. It's even built on an engine from that era.

There's a lot to like here. It's certainly better than most games that come out these days: the main character is punchy and enjoyable to listen to, the visuals are colorful & inviting, and the environment is interesting and detailed. There's also some weaknesses: the enemies don't have a ton of variety, the weapons don't play against enemy strengths & weaknesses, and the antagonist is forgettable.

This game did come out at a point when retro shooters were still a novel thing though. In that particular zeitgeist, it earned it's place. However, now there's a lot more offerings on the market that do more interesting things with the core gameplay. If you're looking for something to fill you time, this will certainly do but if you're an enthusiast, maybe try some of the other offerings on the market.
