I also tried the Age of Redemtion patch, but it doesn't change anything sadly.
There was apparently a trick with the microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit to make it work, but sadly the link that the guy provided is dead, so can't find any good solution.

If you read the main post carefully, you will see the torch doesn't change a thing, still too dark to see even with it.
To be more specific, the problem is that in the last version of Windows and DirectX the gamma setting in the game got broken, stuck in the darkest setting and can't be adjusted.
The only easy and reliable way to fix it is to use a DirectX wrapper like I said (dgvoodoo wrapper), to make the game run on a proper DirectX. And then the gamma setting works again making the game playable like in the old time.
Stremon probably has the best solution out there right now (thanks by the way. I personally haven't tried it yet, but I'll definitely mess around with it more when I get in the mood to try this again)
