Unable to play on Ubuntu - Error code 114
I've got a fresh install of Ubuntu and Helldivers 2 on my desktop machine.

When I click 'Play' game guard will begin to install itself and then I'm met with 2 errors:-
"A debugger has been found running on your system. Please, unload it from memory and restart your program"
"Gameguard: Initialize error: Try rebooting or closing all programs that might interfere and try again. Error code 114"

The game will then close.

Things I've tried:-
- Delete the contents of \bin\gamegaurd
Restart steam and try to play again.
- Same as above, but deleting the gameguard directory as well.
- Try different branches in Steam Play

None of which worked. While the error is not uncommon, most common fixes are geared towards Windows users. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

The game works on my Steam Deck, but I was hoping to use my machine for the increased performance.

what sort of hardware is in a steam deck? what distro is on a steam deck? have you tried applying the same solution within that linux environment?

what version of Ubuntu? I have found this on ubuntu 24.04 due to the same game guard error. I know HD2 works on Manjaro 23.1.0 & Fedora 40 without this issue.

Proton Experimental 9.0 Beta16 just got a new big Proton update, includes Hell Divers2.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Changelog

Made Helldivers 2 work more reliably on different setups.

I have a Linux gaming guide where several other gamer's are playing HD2 already:

I figured it out based on a random YouTube comment left on this video

TL;DR
Don't download Steam through snap, use Flatpak instead

Helldivers now works without any issues, thanks for the suggestions

Snap's is the last crap, that's why i would never use Ubuntu or recommend Ubuntu.

I use for my Distro Official Repo's>Flatpak>AppImage>AUR but i deleted snap support.

I had the same Problem with Manjaro

OS: Manjaro Linux x86_64
Kernel: 6.6.54-2-MANJARO
Steam: Runtime

Solution (works for me):
Installed Protonup-qt via AUR
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/protonup-qt

With proton up i selected the Steamfolder
"/home/YOUR USER NAME/.local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/
-> Installed GE-Proton9-16

Steam: (translated from german)
HD2 -> properties -> compatibility
set the checkmark
set GE-Protom9-16

Game Runs
