HELLDIVERS™ 2
Overheating CPU & GPU
Whenever I play Helldivers with PlayStation users, I notice that my CPU & GPU temps go around 76C or 80C at 100% usage for the CPU when in Combat. The average power draw of 140W on the CPU & 365W on the GPU. Likewise, playing with PC users or simply by myself is around 65C or 70C with little decrease in usage and power.

I'm using the NZXT Kraken Elite 360, & it works wonders for other games without overheating issues. My GPU model is the XFX Speedster MERC310.

System Specs:
I9-13900k
7900 XT
TUF Gaming Z790-Plus Wifi
32GB 6000 DDR5
1440p 165HZ Monitor

My graphic settings are high, Anti-Aliasing is on & and the Render Scale is set to Native with Ambient Occlusion & Screen-Space Global Illumination disabled. I get about 140 frames in any environment.

Cap the FPS in your GPU driver to (Max refresh rate of your display -2).
Example: If you are using a 144Hz display, set the max FPS to 142.

This will reduce input lag and power consumption (= lower temperatures) in every game.
Mmmh so for example i play in 2k 1440p 165ghz i’ve to play 165 fps?

163fps would be optimal for your setup.

Oh thanks i’ll try’ i’ve rtx 4070ti
2k 1440p at 240hz miniled & rtx 4090… so inhave to set the fps to 238 ?
Yes, exactly.

Just so you understand the technical part behind it better:
- Your system will put out as many frames as possible in any game, unless you limit it somehow.
- The stronger your system is and the less demanding of a game you play, the higher is your "waste" of frames generated that are not used, as your display is unable to keep up.

I give you an example. Let's say you play Counter-Strike 1.6 on a 60Hz display. Basically any PC is able to run the game with several hundred FPS at this point. Every frame generated above 60 is not used, but uses up hardware ressources (=> power consumption => heat).

If you limit your FPS to a set value, your PC will stop working on frames you never use and thus you lower the load on your system.

The thing with (max refresh rate -2) comes from some hardware magazines that tested the input lag with different settings and 2 below the maximum was the best value for the lowest input lag.

No... you set it to 240... If you don't want to deal with various visual issues, you'd either run it uncapped or double your hz. Despite what people parrot, running your games at a higher fps than your monitor will look better than capped to it, or lower. You always want an image ready to be displayed instead of attempting to fruitlessly sync them, and you want to account for the dips and hitches. You also don't want to cap it to a wonky number, but instead if your monitor is 120hz, then 40fps/not 60, but that's besides the point. Capping probably also won't help you if you're trying to hit 240hz because you're most likely not getting a steady 240+fps, and if you cared that much about temps, you wouldn't have a 240hz monitor or a 4090.

It's not "parroting" something if several hardware magazines, sites and channels come to the same conclusion independently from another.

This thread is about people experiencing a high load/temperature of their CPU and GPU, which is most likely caused by components running unlimited in some scenes where the game itself is not properly optimised.

Apart from that, your advice is either incomplete or outright wrong. Try playing League of Legends (or any other, non demanding game) with a decent rig and your uncapped FPS will lead to your champion stuttering around, as there are too many frames which will lead to image tearing.

As a rule of thumb: capped FPS will lower usage, power consumption, temperature and input lag.

Thank you for the advice! For anyone else reading through this, I followed this instruction, disabled the in-game FPS limter (which was off by default), and changed the in-game "Render Scale" setting which is under the display tab. My GPU temperature went from 82.5 C to 66.5 C immediately!
Funny is ran into this too. Newer PC but my CPU is hitting 75-78c. That was max but usually hovers 71-72ish. GPU is 69-72c usually. I too noticed the spike when on mission complete, I think I saw a max CPU of 83c and had me worried. Must be helldrivers issue?
I had the same problem with my 1 week old Radeon 7800xt and 5700x, went to AMD settings and choose HYPR-RX Eco mode then I set my fps limiter at 80. CPU temperature went from 80°c to 60°C.
Make sure you have the correct standoff size on your cooler pump bracket. That helped me solve this problem. I had the LGA 1200 on instead of the LGA 1700. They look almost identical but the slight size difference matters a lot! pump wasn’t making good enough contact with my 13900k even with a contact frame. Swap the standoff and hitting max 65c with an undervolt.
Limiting Framerate fixed this for me. Apparently the software allows your video card to go FREAKIN' CRAZY when there is nothing much going on graphically.
GPU runs 64-68c
CPU runs cool also
What I have a problem with is when the game is finished and the screen is black forever stuck in a transition sequence between ending the game and getting back to the ship. It causes my gpu to hit 83c just for loading a game. This is a problem.
