The mission was to recover that data, now if it gets drowned into a body of water a deep chasm or whatever endless hole then well....you've failed doing the mission haven't you?
Even worse. You cannot end that mission aside from aborting the ongoing campaign. Pelican will never come for you unless you are willing to wait 40 minutes+
Have to abandon mission.
