Leftover data, HELP!
Okay, so I got this game because a friend of mine wanted to play this. However, I haven't really been playing this, and I wanted to free up some room for other games. HOWEVER, after I deleted it, it said that my laptop didn't really get rid of, what seems like, almost no data. I've looked and looked for ways to solve this, but I can't find anything that helps with that issue. So can someone, Please, help me with this problem. And it would also help if there was simple step by step instructions to do it. I'm even willing to go to geek squad for this, but if I can do it myself, that would be nice.

  • So you uninstall the Game within the Steamclient?
  • ... and on the other hand your Drive, where this was installed, didnt show free space?
  • Did you allready looked into your Systemlist of installed apps to be sure, this game is realy not "installed" anymore?
  • You looked into your Trash/bin?

As I can look on my files, its claims 75 GB of storage.
You can find the Installation at following path on Windows:
[Drive-Letter (eg. C:)]\[path-to-your-steam-installation]\steamapps\common\Helldivers 2\
If there is this folder and has content after you uninstall the game via Steam-Client or via the System-App-List, first navigate to the subfolder "tools" und run the "gguninst.exe". That uninstall the GameGuard Anit-Chat-Software, if there is still something there, just to be safe.
After this, you can just delete the hole folder "Helldivers 2" (Faster: press SHIFT + DEL on your Keyboard, to instant delete the folder without putting it into the trash/bin of your System). Thats it.

When nothing is there and its not in your trash/bin, than you may have other issues.
I can recommend to use the software "TreeSize Free" to list the storage usage, just to have an idea whats going on. Please be careful, dont delete just system things (=

If you are on Windows, you can also run the cleanup service of the OS.
Its builtin, go for it to your List of all your dives (computer) and select one drive, right click => Properties => Tab: General => Button: Disc Cleanup, choose what claim huge space and let it delete (it could be the windows Update Storage, the Temp-files, etc.)

Well, I uninstalled from steam, by click ‘uninstall’ then, I deleted the file after a bit (out of frustration, you really shouldn’t have to go through this much trouble to make room on your laptop) than I ran that program. However, an odd thing is, was that file only had MBs in it, and for some reason, it’s say most of the data space is being taken up but something outside of steam. And before you say anything, before and after deleting the game, the free space on my laptop didn’t really change much. I checked, there should’ve been a lot more free space.

Ok, so this folder was existing - right? And you deleted it, but it was only a few MB in size, right?

Outside of Steam means, other programms, Windows itself, your Private data, etc, rigth?

For me its not 100% clear what you allready have done, but let it split into a few things to be more clear:
  1. How big is your Drive in total and how much it is used?
  2. Whats the size of your Steam-Folder?
  3. Did you have there more games installed?
  4. What is consume a huge amount of space and how much is it?
  5. hy.sys or hyberfil.sys (hybernate STATE Savefile for Windows) is as big as your virtual memory is used, is dynamic and can consme a lot
  6. pagefile.sys and/or swapfile.sys (Its the Page/SWAP FIle(s) and can grow up to the double size of the size of your RAM) is dynamic and can consume a lot
  7. So what is consume so much space beside of the folder Windows, if its installed on your System-Drive

Okay, in order, yes, yes, yes, and for the other questions, I’m at work right, so I’m away from my laptop, meaning I can’t check things right now. However, from what I did see, and what I had left on steam, it matched what it said it took up. However, by deleting helldivers 2, it should’ve freed up about 75 GB worth of data, but not much changed. It might’ve moved somewhere else, but that shouldn’t be the case. I’ll check my recycle bin and run that cleanup thing you mentioned when I get home, and see if that does it.

Disk clean-up*

Get CCleaner and run it after disk clean-up

Thanks, I’ll let you know if that fixes it or not.

Okay, there was a bit of stuff in my recycle bin, but that was mostly old data from other games, and ran disc clean, However, I'm not sure what to do on CCleaner.

Okay, Looking things over now, and talking about it with other friends, It's not in my steam folder, and it's likely stored as 'non steam', so I've been looking for that. Plus, ccleaner is saying there's only about 3 GB available to free up, so I'm kind of at a loss now.

To be clear: For this support, nobody needs access to your device!

Alright, update. I forgot about the offer, and made an appointment with geek squad, which was today. I dropped it off, and should get it back in a couple of days. They said they should be able to clear up about 50GB or more, 20ish of it being an old backup of stuff, but given how much trouble I’ve gone through with this, and them being the experts in this, and what I got from my efforts as well, I’ll take it. I’ll make a final update when I get it back, and let you know what and where it was, in case anyone else has the same issue I do.

Not a game issue.

If you read above, it’s game related. And I also got my laptop back. So, it was mostly back up data, so they didn’t really find anything related to the game itself that was leftover. I don’t know anymore, perhaps it’s just room that’s be reserved for the game itself. But honestly, I’ve tried everything I can on my end, and had experts look at it, and I was able to clear about 50GB of data total, so I’m calling it good here. Thank you guys for the suggestions.

try using bleachbit

if you use torrents, check if this is saving space.
