HELLDIVERS™ 2

CPU temps very high when the game executable hangs. (And while quitting.)
Helldivers has 2 issues for me:
1: The game causes a large spike in CPU temp upon quitting. (But not while playing)
2: If the game hangs in a certain way, CPU temps will also rise out of control.

Since the game launched, when quitting Helldivers 2 my CPU temp spikes quite high for a moment or two. It never gets that high when playing, or when loading the game, but every time I quit the game after a couple hour session my CPU temp spikes to ~82c for ~10 seconds.

To put this into perspective: (EDIT: Corrected fan curve numbers.)
CPU is ~40c @ 1% cpu utilization, 40% fan speed. Idling in windows.
CPU is ~48c @ 16% cpu utilization, 43% fan speed. On the dropship.
CPU is ~62c @ 42% cpu utilization, 52% fan speed. In 5* mission with some action.
CPU is ~82c @ ??% cpu utilization, 100% fan speed. For 10 seconds after quitting HD2.

The Dual 120mm CPU fan runs on a motherboard bios curve of CPU @ 40c=40%, 65c=55%, 70c=75%, 80c=100% fan speed. While this fan curve does ramp dramatically during the 70-80c mark, the fact that it can be 48c on the dropshop only a few moments before quitting, and then it ramps up to 82c (a 34c increase) on quitting seems very strange to me.

Ive never had any game or application cause my CPU temps to get to 75c before, let alone 80c+. While this is not a huge problem on its own due to the relatively short nature of it, there is an issue that occurs when the game hangs and sometimes needs to be quit by (trying to) alt-f4 because it wont allow tabbing out.

In multiple instances of the game failing to return to the drop ship after a mission, the only way to (try to) get out was to ALT+F4. And in multiple cases doing so would cause my CPU temps skyrocket, causing all of the fans in my system to run at max speed for as long as the executable remained hung.

In one case just trying to tab out while waiting for the game to return to the drop ship (after it had been stuck on a dark screen for 45 seconds) was what triggered the 'hang' and caused my fans to ramp up to max speeds. (Which only happens at 80c+ temps.)

In all of these cases HD2 does not release video control back to windows upon hanging and was staying always on top preventing me from displaying my desktop, tabbing out, seeing any other program, or diagnosing the problem. Because i did not have my Task manager set to always on top to override it, i was unable to force the application closed or tell what was going on with the CPU usage / temps via my normal diagnostic programs. (Process Explorer / HWInfo), and had to turn off my PC to fix it. (I still had full mouse control, and could access the CTRL+ALT+Delete menu, it wasnt a system hang, only a game-crash/hang.)

On two different occasions i spent ~2 minutes trying to troubleshoot the issue of my PC fans running at max speed after the game hung before having to restart my PC. For the final instance i set task manager to always-on-top so i could terminate the process if it hung again. But was too nervous to leave the PC in that state for long so didnt spend time trying to gather more information since I couldnt access my other programs anyway and could only terminate it via Task Manager.

These hangs have only happened a few times in 70 hours of gameplay, however the game will reliably cause a large temp spike upon quitting after a session. Recently i started running HWinfo just before quitting the game to check my various CPU temps, and was able to record a temp of 82c caused solely from quitting the game, which can be replicated after pretty much any game session.

Ryzen 7700
RTX 3060
32 Gigs DDR5
Windows 10

Additional notes:

I run MSI Afterburner in the background while playing to provide performance monitoring and GPU power limiting.

I primarily running the game in full screen because the performance is often unreliable in borderless window, sometimes looking choppy even when MSIAB reports it as running a solid 60fps. I believe that when the game hangs and stays always-on-top, that it happened in both true fullscreen and borderless window video modes. But the video mode (sometimes) changes when tabbing out so cant be sure what mode it was in at the time of the hang.

I have a ryzen 5 5600, my temps spike to around 70c when under heavy load in HD2...

How's your airflow?

Thats hard to quantify, but in general I'd say my airflow is respectable.
1x 200mm front fan, 1x 140mm rear fan, no obstructions except the Dual 120mm Thermalright Peerless Assassin[pcpartpicker.com] in a Phanteks Enthoo Pro[pcpartpicker.com] ATX Full Tower Case. (Has plenty of space inside / isnt a hotbox.)

The setup is optimized to run almost silent at anything below 50c on the CPU with max fan speeds at anything over 80c.

Im often near 45% CPU utilization in HD2 which in this case seems to produce a temp of around 62c with my settings. You wouldnt think that quitting the game should cause my temps to spike an additional 20c over what my in-mission temps are.

There is the potential argument to be made that the sudden increase in processing that happens when quitting the game from the dropship @ 48c / 43% fan speed overwhelms the fan hysteresis, however no other application under moderate to heavy load has caused my CPU to reach the same temps that i get solely from quitting HD2.

I set 80c as the trigger point for 100% fan speeds because ive only had this PC for about 8 months, and have never had any game or application ever cause me to reach more than about 72c before. So if something is causing me to hit 80c+ i want to be aware of it, know its happening, and be able to monitor the situation.

82c is the temp spike i get to when quitting the game (all my system fans ramp up for ~10 seconds). While the temp spike on quitting is a concern, and possibly indicative of an issue with the game, its the presumably out of control CPU usage / whatever causes the game to hang that causes my CPU temps to skyrocket.

All i can say is that when it hangs, it causes a sustained temp on my CPU above 80c, with all CPU and Case fans all pegged at 100% fan speeds for multiple minutes (until the executable is terminated.)

Just a bump because its been a couple of months. The issue is still unfixed, had the game 'black screen crash' while tabbing out about a week ago. The game becomes unresponsive, blocks visual access to the desktop, and the CPU temps skyrocket.

A friend experienced a similar black screen issue today with all of the fans in their system maxing out after the screen went black in game. (Although they could not move the mouse or get any input devices to work.)

Friend's PC:
RX 6950 XT
Ryzen 5800X
32 Gigs DDR4
Windows 10

Did you ever find a fix? I just built a new PC and I am experiencing the exact same issue. Temps are completely normal when running and doing anything else, but as soon as I quit the game, my CPU temp spikes to 82C. It hangs when I quit as well.

There was one time recently when i tabbed out of the game while quitting that it did not do this, but i've not attempted to duplicate that yet to see if that could be a workaround. I cant recall if that was also the time that the game crashed after quitting or not though.

Had similar heat issues with 5800X. Nothing else, even benchmarks could run my CPU as hot as this game. So I just BRUTEFORCED the cooling to the Moon. 5x140mm PMAX fans, 2x120mm PMAX fans on the CPU cooler and 1 more on the back of the case. So now I can idle the CPU at 20C if I need to. Game doesn't reach 65C anymore even when it boosts my CPU to 100% as if it's calculating the mass of the Universe. It's a poorly optimized game and there is almost ZERO chance that this or the plethora of other technical issues be resolved. Sadly...:steamfacepalm:

Open Task Manager and make sure it's not still running in the background. For me the game doesn't close properly after quitting. Hangs and runs in the background at 100% CPU. So I have to "End Task" it to REALLY close it.

As for the "Freeze when quitting" -> the only solution I use is: ALT + ENTER to switch to window mode -> Close the game with the X button. Laugh as much as you want that's the ONLY way that I can quit the game without freezing my whole PC.

one way to close freezed game is windows key + tab -> new desktop, select it and open task manager there & close the game
