Does anyone use melee weapons?
I think they're more of a niche, and I've never seen another player use them. Believe it or not, I found them mildly useful in the rare event that you find yourself close to enemies such as Devastators, but, generally speaking, taking enemies out at a distance is preferable.

They really need third slot for melee weapon. they're NOT worth the secondary slot AT ALL

Just give out free starter knife as melee weapon for everyone, then they can unlock baton or hatchet later.

I bring the constitution every game, it has a very good dps with the animation cancel bug.

you don't even need to do this. payday 2 did a great job to adrdess this. they made the weaponstock attack the default so your not losing any animations , and then you place a melee weapon over it and it changes to weapon you have exquipped. i would imagine their biggest contention with this would be the weapon swap animations. and then you just put a delay on that. you could have press melee for quick half damage attack or hold the melee button to equip it as a weapon. the mouse button would swing and the melee button maybe special action tied to it now, like a spartan kick. i feel alot of that would be easy to implement, but i don't know ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about coding.

I use it when I want to mess around.
D10 is easy enough that you can bring a melee weapon and shield and run through most outposts fine in bot town.
Nothing quite like cutting your way through the cannon fortresses in the orbital defences missions, very cinematic.
Personally think we either need a better moveset, or a much more powerful two handed exclusive melee weapon

There are two issues with melee weapons.

First off they are locked behind the store and premium warbond, so this already creates a niche playerbase by itself. And secondly melee weapons we do have are not appealing at all to the fantasy. Baton, staff and a shovel. These are not appealing options to distribute freedom and democracy with.

I do find it odd devs aren't adding warhammer inspired weapons. Power swords, hammers, chainswords, power fists. Even exosuit could use a power first to smack a charger in the face to send them reeling back. Things that actually appeal to the male fantasy.

depends on the mood i'm in, but not often to be fair.

I've been running Talon with the Shield for chaff only, with primary being a crossbow used only to close bugholes. It honestly felt quite nice and refreshing and since most of the kills were quite close I'd wager running a spear would also be decent. You'll still have to maneuver around and use stuff like grenades and stratagems, but the biggest con I'd say is having to use peak physique.

Optimal? No.

Fun and refreshing? Probably.

Playable? Yes on bugs, no on bots, mixed on illuminates (likely not due to jetpackers and drones).
The biggest issue to bringing melee weapons are your teammates.
why would I need a shovel when I can just take out my smg and spray
maybe if they ever add an AoE thunder hammer, even if it's just a medium armour piercing hit with lightning arcs

might be nice to smash your way through a patrol instead of having to spray mag after mag into them as you're backpedalling

The Stun Lance which is exclusive to the Urban Legends DLC uses a two-handed thrust which appears to have longer range than the other melee weapons, though I haven't tested them extensively.
I used them exclusively when they came out for about 3 months! The spear is the best, the baton is okay, the hatchet is not that good. The stun effect is amazing.

You would be surprised by what can be killed with melee:

TANKS (aim for the main body)
HULKS(hit the vent)
CANNONS (vents)
FACTORY STRIDERS (landing on top and hitting the rear vent, or piercing to hit the belly with the spear)
CHARGERS (anywhere, front legs are the best)
IMPALERS (same as chargers)
ILLUMINATE SHIP SHIELDS
ILLUMINATE TRIPODS (anywhere on the legs)

I wish I could recommend the riot shield, but personally find it breaks too easily. I use the bubble shield. The melee boost from the Vipers warbond is a must.

If you want to stun lock heavies, give it a try. Really fun alternate playstyle.
And I must reiterate the stun effect being so good on spear and baton. Chargers are a joke, you can kill them like a matador for sport. Hulks can't move. Stalkers get frozen in place as you pierce their skull over and over.

The poke is nice from the spear, makes it much easier to poke out dev heads.
It can be used one handed though, I think we'd benefit from a big ♥♥♥♥ off two handed sword with some cleave and nice damage
I use the hatchet for illuminate, it's really fun.

melee weapons are joke weapons. just like in real life, literally any gun is going to be more effective than an axe at killing things. same thing with the constitution. its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ceremonial bolt action from the 1900's. obviously its not as effective as the bolter and laser guns we have access to. there are niche uses for both, but bringing a real weapon is always going to be more effective.
