The game that was advertised as a persistent war actually changing in real time?

Surprised Pikachu.

I honestly think 1 factory stryder is going to be able to kill all Illuminate by itself.

I don't think they planned for that to happen. That was the biggest attack on a planet in the entire game's history, and we only barely won it with I think a record breaking percentage of the community committed to it (remember progress in campaigns per operation is based on the the active player count).

It seems to me that they original intended us to lose that fight, which would've resulted in the Illuminates keeping the planet, but after noticing that we might actually win it, they decided to just leave the possibility of a victory open rather than altering the stats to make it unwinnable.

People should be excited by this, not upset. Because it proves that Joel is going to let the community win something when that wasn’t the original intent. Keep in mind that during launch they never would have let the community do this and they would have kept tweaking the numbers to insure it was impossible, this actually did happen.

People have constantly been asking for illuminates and new content in general, no way they didnt consider a big spike in player numbers.

for an idea of how close it was that we won, according to the helldivers companion website we won by a 7-9 minute window

Their plan might have been that we lose the fight, but they 100% planned for our victory too. This is evidence that moment we won a victory message went out, showing that they have already written this path of the story ready for us.

That is true. However setting up a message, and actually having the Illuminate return in mass are very different things., so I wouldn't be surprised if they still need more time to get them back out. I think this may be why we haven't gotten the next major order yet today, because usually it doesn't take this long for a major order to come out, so it seems they were still a bit caught off guard by the victory, and need more time to finish up the proper response. Frankly the only reason why I can't see them immediately trying to bring the Illuminate back out is to give us a the FRV major order first, which to be fair might happen, since I doubt they would try to cram it all into one major order.

Well to be fair, they definitely did anticipate a disproportionately high amount of effort being put into Calypso's defense, judging by the obscenely massive size of the attack, but it just wasn't enough.
