Story line?

Is there a story line or plot/theme in this game or is it just instance based killing of robots and bugs? Any quests or campaign like activities?

No story line, main characters or cutscenes. There is a daily mission for you like killing 50 enemies with a certain stratagem, and a global goal for all players, like, clear this entire system. Apart from that?

You are a freshly trained Helldiver, and you will do your part to spread democracy and defeat the enemies of mankind with extreme prejudice and generous amounts of friendly fire

They write the story live in response to player actions.

Theoretically.

There are more players than they ever expected, and the galactic meta-progression aspects have seemingly been turned off to allow people to play.

100 years ago the war happened between the Cyborgs, the illuminate and the terminids. We pushed them back to their home planet and defeated them all. 100 years later they attack us. And now we are here fighting them.

Well, game is still brandnew, but if the first game was anything to go by, we won't see any story beyond "You are the ELITE of Super Earth and you will shoot anything with more legs than you". But who knows, maybe in the far future they will add something cinematic.

Wouldn't count on it, though
