How do I open Hellpods and what's that green plant in the background?

You don't open them, you need to upload the data. The thing to do is even in your screenshot, the stratagem that appears in the upper-left corner, and it's explained in the upper-right corner.

That's not a hellpod, that thing there is an optional objective, you can see how to enable it in the screenshot it even shows you the prompt for it. You need to do the left down right up whatever combination appears to begin uploading data and therefore complete the objective.

Use the stratagem that is gained when standing near it and wait for data to download.

That's an escape pod, you can't open them, it's a sub-objective. Hence the instructions to use the upload data strategem on your screen.

The plant just looks like one of the environmental hazards, it probably explodes if you step on it.

This is not a hellpod, you can't open it, it's grass. Look at the top left corner of the screen.
