The joke is that everyone is expendable, and when your character dies, they truly are dead and are immediately replaced with somebody else. The game pokes fun at over-patriotism to the point of hilarity. (Think America ♥♥♥♥ Yeah.)
As far as it being on the level of DRG, it's hard to say. Yes, and no? HD already has more armor and weapon choices on release than DRG has currently, but the weapons themselves cannot be customized in anyway, like DRG. You could also probably grind through the progression in about a week, while as with DRG it would take a very long time. But then again, most of DRG's rewards seem to be mostly about cosmetics, while this game it's about getting more and more weapons and armor choices.
Not to say Helldivers don't have different looking armor aesthetically, but they all seem to have their own stats too. I kind of wish there were cosmetic slots.
It's really hard to tell what Helldivers 2 is going for as it's too early, and because the devs said their current roadmap is now considered obsolete/out of date considering the unexpected sales they got. We don't know what direction they were trying to turn the game to before, or what they plan to change.
Unexpected as it went better as they expected or worse? I wonder if this game has bright future infront of it like DRG does
