How does this game compare to Lost Planet 1 & 2?

Title. What does it do better? How is it the same?

Has similar playstyles, but where Lost Planet is more of a story driven action with a bit of platforming, this is more of a similar vein as something like Left 4 Dead or Deep Rock Galactic.

You go in, do the mission objectives, then get out. Rinse and repeat.

I'd suggest looking at Helldivers 1 to get a good idea, as tons of gameplay footage of that is already out there. This is essentially the same but now in a fully 3D environment instead of a topdown shooter.

Similarities - Third Person Shooter, fight buggies on frozen planets sometimes, get drops for supplies and weapons.

nostalgia hits hard man, they could be similar, but Im gonna play LP2 again on my steamdeck since you mentioned it and I cant join the servers for 2 days straight so frustrating
