Why is HD2 so popular?
Those are steam numbers only, no playstation numbers included here:

Helldivers all-time peak
6.691

Helldivers 2 all-time peak
~255k

This is insane...

Why is that?
HD2 changed basically nothing except the players perspective and maybe better graphics due to the closer look players get.

Don't get me wrong, I feel very happy for the game and it's devs.
What I am curious about, is, that so many ppl on yt, twitch, social media and what not, were completely surprised by the game. Some saying it popped out of the nowhere for them. Like (the absolutely fantastic) HD1 never existed...

From mixed reviews, the game just went kinda viral over the course of a weak or so.

I can already see Helldivers walking around at gamescom and such.

GG devs. Keep it up.

EDIT:
I figured out steam charts numbers are not accurate. The numbers are actually higher, at least for HD2. But still, the gap between those 2 games is huge.

Good game = good numbers

i know, crazy concept.

Yes it has some problems, but i doubt they are hard to fix. So far only match making is annoying. Everything else works good enough.

HD1 was a good game too but didn't nearly reach such numbers

Good, but also niche and very obscure from an obscure dev. Swiching from top-down makes it appear more mainstream, so many more check it out, also dev is not that obscure anymore and backed by Sony now.

Yeah, I'd say Arrowhead made it <3

We still need to see how things will go with HD2, how motivating future warbounds and features/additions turn out and how big the remaining playerbase will be, after the hype shuts down.

But for now, it looks like future games with their name on it, will get much more attention than all their games before HD2.
Like printing Arrowhead on a games cover will be a statement or a seal of quality.

I really hope they won't get bought by ubisoft or some other big company.

Let's hope so, and yeah, it rarely ever goes well when bought.

It is somewhat funny to me tho, that the biggest issue this game has is that it was too successful. More so than anyone expected, leading to servers exploding. Hopefully they'll sort it soon tho.

Despite the games flaws it can be enjoyed.

The mods are more upfront and honest. Most companies pretend to be innocent and play dumb. These ones actually call each other out in public.

Honestly, I'd rather have a flawed game that's honest instead of a good game with cowards and liars.

There's balance issues to sort out, but currently devs are working on trying to fix bigger problems to make sure people can even play. Armor will be worked on (it doesn't work atm). Weapons need balancing. One of the gameplay problems is not being able to get through armor with most weapons. Which means not using those weapons at all. People be using breaker shotgun because it 1: It punches through armor. 2: Has decent ammo. And 3: Has good accuracy even at range. Why even take a marskman rifle? And if I use an SMG then I can't punch through armor. Or if I kill a bigger bug it takes a whole mag.

The first starship troopers FPS game (not the coop one) managed to make it work better. Bugs could be tanky but aiming for the eyes was the trick with tiger bugs. Tanker bugs were also Interesting. Which were more of a threat then a bile titan in this game.

I found the coop starship troopers underwhelming TBH. The obectives were too close together and the maps were too small.

If the servers didn't suck ass, it'd be gold
"no political BS shoved in your face" did you play the game? Its critiques and makes fun of american exceptionalism and imperialism in like every line of dialogue, politics is more than trans people you know.
I'd say the political stuff it does do isn't the type to piss off random groups of people.

It's Starship Troopers dude!

there are no good PvE coop games on market, either they are PvPvE, or PVP with some PvE, but no coop game balanced and build purely around PvE.

I have bought HD1 just to support devs and check original version, but it did not clicked with me, it is too clunky in many ways.

HD2 have lots of things done right, is easy to get into, and fun

For me one reason is the the extensive use of directional audio.

All games have surround but when the majority of your enemies are in front, rear audio barely gets used.

In this game gunshots and explosions going off 360° around is the norm.

The cherry on top, surprisingly are the quiet moments when you are sneaking in a dark foggy jungle and you can hear the exact position of the snarls of the stalkers but unable to see them.

My favorite moment thus far was when we drop poded onto a patrol in a shattered formation. I could hear my teammates fighting an screaming through the fog, I could pinpoint their location but I couldn't see them.

Very reminiscent of the horror scenes from Predator, and yet it was totally organic, not scripted.

Speaking of sound design.
The first few dives inside your hellpod onto a planet you do and the orchestral music accompanying them, feel extremely satisfying and motivating. It gets less satisfying each time you dive down but man, as a new player, you really feel like a bad ass kinda elite marine, dropping down from your super earth destroyer, spreading that democracy.

I love 3rd person games and 3rd person shooters are near the tops for me. Plus, I think 3rd person shooters tend to be popular anyway and it's a fun co-op. I wish Aliens: Fireteam Elite and Outriders was more open like this game instead of on rails.

Being at the right time at the right place I guess. Kudos to devs, the success is well deserved.
