Why is HD2 so popular?
Those are steam numbers only, no playstation numbers included here:

Helldivers all-time peak
6.691

Helldivers 2 all-time peak
~255k

This is insane...

Why is that?
HD2 changed basically nothing except the players perspective and maybe better graphics due to the closer look players get.

Don't get me wrong, I feel very happy for the game and it's devs.
What I am curious about, is, that so many ppl on yt, twitch, social media and what not, were completely surprised by the game. Some saying it popped out of the nowhere for them. Like (the absolutely fantastic) HD1 never existed...

From mixed reviews, the game just went kinda viral over the course of a weak or so.

I can already see Helldivers walking around at gamescom and such.

GG devs. Keep it up.

EDIT:
I figured out steam charts numbers are not accurate. The numbers are actually higher, at least for HD2. But still, the gap between those 2 games is huge.

This description also fits helldivers one perfectly only in helldivers one you also had mechs, vehicles, boss levels and more yet there was not a fraction of the playerbase HD2 now has.
Helldivers 2 is fantastic and I am loving it but it is a bit shocking that so few seem to even have known about the awesome HD1 but everyone flocks to 2.

Exactly...

A lot of streamers picked up the game. If the right game gets released at the right time, streamers can really boost the popularity of such game. Also, I'm not super sure about your stats on helldivers 1. I played it on day one, and I remember it having bigger peak numbers.

I took the numbers directly from the steam charts

Well, steam charts may not be completely reliable. Look at the peak numbers for Modern Warfare 2 (2009). I'm quite sure they were not 22k in 2009. Sadly, I can't really cite a good source for you.

I agree dropping a 500kg eagle bomb or detonating a hell bomb looks pretty damn cool.

I would like to have more ragdoll though.
Nothing is flying further than a player punched by a stalker rn. They really punch harder than mike tyson lmao.

I would like this to be true for enemies and their limbs/body parts aswell when being blown up by explosives.

Ty anyways, i didn't know you can't rely on steam charts.

i tried helldivers 1 and didn't like the perspective, this is much better

A lot of times it's usually two things. The right product at the right time and luck.

The release was also a complete surprise for many people with little to no marketing.

People like the concept put forth by Starship Troopers. A militaristic government dedicated to killin' bugs, and in this case bots too.

The only good bug, is a DEAD bug!

For me personally, I loved the first game's premise and mechanics, the only issue I had and the reason I didn't play it was the camera. The perspective difference changed everything for me. It could have been literally the same game as Helldivers 1 and I would have played it.

People are hungry for a decent coop shooter theses days, and the release of Suicide squad who sucked ass probably helped.

Also Darktide wasn't that good too and vermintide2 is kind of old. Alien and Space Troopers games wasn't exciting too.

It just feels good. It reminds me of the Lost Planet 2 co-op days. Four random goofballs fighting robots and bugs.

The over-exaggerated patriotism giving the game a lot of charm
The movie-like battles and last-stands

The physics and interactivity with the environment. Diving to safety, or into danger.

Getting rag-dolled by a giant bug or explosions will never get old.

The Micro-transactions not being intrusive as hell, nor overpriced. Hell those cosmetics you buy with the premium currency? You can get those if you're patient and just play the game without having to spend money. I only have two left to unlock with the premium currency and never spent any money for em. Only that battle-pass thing.

Aside from connection issues, the game is also pretty stable.

I am generally not interested in games with marvel or dc characters, but what is that game about? Whas it supposed to be similar to Helldivers 2?
DespotAspid Feb 16, 2024 @ 3:41pm
Simple. HD2 = lot of fun.
