But shield/ammo/orbital railcannon
Ammo backpack so people don't have to call in resupplies so much, Quasar cannon to take care of heavies/dropships, Orbital laser in case stuff really hits the fan and they need help and I would go gattling turret or missle turret depending on your needs. On Higher difficulties (especially bots) I would run missile turret. I personally havn't unlocked it yet but it sounds good for armor
edit: Like someone said shield is good
if someone on your team runs a team weapon, like recoiless or autocannon, you can try and convince them to give you the ammunition pack for you to reload them.
weirdly, it doesn't break armor and seems to have less ammo than autocannon turret.
An EMS Strike to facilitate them better too. A rail cannon for quick priority target dismissal like chargers and hulks.
And the last can be yours. A shield bubble might help for tanking or providing your friends with a safe bastion for a little longer.
You have a few options though. Supply backpack, shield generator, ems mortar/strike, and eagle smoke strike. DO NOT RUN a full support build though, you will be just holding your team back, and likely making it harder for them by not killing enemies.
Overall, if you want to be helpful with enemy disruption and support, and not cause issues by having insufficient offensive options, Supply backpack, ems mortar, quasar cannon and eagle airstrike might work well. For weapons, dominator for raw damage in a short time span, grenade pistol for utility, and stun grenades for their usefulness.
You will have a mixed role of dealing with high value targets like hulks, tanks, chargers, and bile titans to a degree, while having significant lockdown potential with ems mortar and stun grenades. The dominator can handle devastators, hive guards, and brood lords reliably, with airstrike being able to handle groups and some heavies well, and the grenade pistol for fabricators and bug holes. The supply pack will give you a full ammo supply for the dominator, 2 grenades for both the pistol and stuns, and 2 stims, and can be used on allies.
Is this a good stratagem and gear loadout? Not particularly, but it should be functional enough for a support role.
- Bugs -
Medium Stim Armour, Shield backpack, Grenade Launcher, EAT, Eagle Airstrike or Cluster Bombs or Orbital Airburst depending on mission, EMS Mortar Turret, Inc. Breaker, impact Nades.
- Bots -
Medium Scout Armour, Autocannon, Orbital Laser, EMS Mortar Turret, AC Turret, (where I expect choke points or clean lanes of fire) Sickle/Breaker/Punnisher depending on mission, Stun Nades.
I still need to unlock a few weapons so might switch out AC for Eruptor based on what I've seen so far, but I do like having the Sickle/Shotties for fast movers / fodder.
Honestly my loadouts still vary a fair bit based on mission/planet and what the team is packing. There's no one loadout for all situations.
Even on diff 9 I've never ran out of ammo, as it should be since by then anyone should've mastered ammo management.
You could wear an armor with the physician trait that adds 2 stims and the supply pack and try to pretend you're being helpful while chasing around teammates trying to stim and resupply them, for the rest I'd bring a quasar, the dome shield, a turret and the orbital laser, i supposed that's the closest you can get to a "support".
Granted this is almost meme tier and I wouldn't attempt using this loadout on any diff above 7.
Bugs: Incendiary Breaker, Peacemaker, Impact Grenade
Railcannon Strike, Grenade Launcher, Guard Dog Rover, and EATS. I can cover Spitters and MOST minor bugs and I call down EATS for everyone else to deal with chargers.
Primary
Forget about running a meme "support" primary, like a Liberator Concussive. Your team will be better supported by the enemy being dead. Utility from guns comes from stagger, so a high stagger gun that can still kill is what you want. Good options are: Punisher (Plasma variant is semi-useful if used right), Dominator, Breaker (vs. lighter targets). If the DMRs ever get buffed then the Diligence CS and Adjucator could be useful. Eruptor has loads of stagger, AoE and damage. Explosive crossbow is OK. The Eruptor allows you to run more horde-clear focused guns more easilly.
Secondary
Redeemer or grenade pistol are the only real options. Senator is underpowered, but not horrible. Fun for Big Iron memes.
Grenade
Impact or stun both are good choices. Impacts stagger and kill stuff and open doors. Stun grenades can save lives, and help lining up shots and stratagems easier. Smoke grenades exist, but the grenade slot is too valuable to waste on them imo.
Stratagems
If you're looking for support stuff EMS Strike, EMS Mortar, Eagle Smoke are your only non-damage options really. Everything else is too much of a meme. Even the smoke is pushing meme territory.
Shield Relay can be decent when used correctly. It can block a lot of stuff that people wouldn't expect, like Charger charges and all bile attacks, even from Titans. It also draws aggro from everything nearby and is relatively durable. Low cooldown too.
Regardless of other stuff you will probably want to run at least one damaging stratagem. Precision Strike goes a very long way in the early levels and before you can upgrade the 500kg. Same goes for the good old Eagle Airstrike.
380mm is more useful than people give it credit for. It can wipe out whole bot bases and do good damage to bug bases... or it can miss completely. You have to think before using it though. You don't want to bomb a base and then have your whole team be forced to wait for 30 seconds until the fireworks are over.
Backpacks
Honestly, just run something that keeps you going and has synergy with your build. You being able to function is more important than anything else. That said, Supply Pack is great for team utility and personal utility, as long as you can stay alive with it.
Also remember that you will be able to drop backpacks for your teammates after the cooldown is over. Use that and plan around that if you have a premade group.
Ballistic Shield is pretty decent against bots.
Support weapons
Arc Thrower has the highest stagger in the game. EAT is available early and is one of the best anti-heavy options in the game. No idea when Quasar unlocks, but it's probably the best anti-heavy gun in the game.
AMR, Autocannon and Laser Cannon all have massive synergy with stuns. Flamethrower has synergy with stuns vs. bugs (but fire damage is buggy if you're not the host).
Stalwart and the medium MG are decent options. Especially the MG in the early levels.
Pick something you like and make a build around it that makes sense.
Boosters
Run whatever your team needs from you. Simple as. Muscle Enhancement deserves a special mention - it's exceptionally good on planets with sand storms and blizzards.
Some examples that I would run at early levels:
Bugs, mostly
Punisher, Redeemer, Impact grenade / Stun grenade
EMS Strike, Precision Strike / Eagle Airstrike, Supply Pack, Machine Gun
Pretty self-explanatory.
Eruptor, Redeemer, Stun grenade
EMS Strike, Precision Strike / Eagle Airstrike, Supply Pack, Stalwart
You literally have infinite ammo and a tool for everything, but you rely on Precision Strike as your only anti-heavy tool. Doesn't matter if you have a team tho. Eruptor can also kill Chargers with practice.
Bots or bugs
Dominator / Punisher / Breaker, Redeemer, Impact grenade / Stun grenade
EMS Strike, Precision Strike / Eagle Airstrike, Shield Relay, EAT / Autocannon
If you run EAT you have a backpack slot free so get one from your teammates later in the game. Otherwise pretty self-explanatory. Can run grenade pistol if you want. Shield Relay is surprisingly good vs. bugs on like diff 6 - 7. 8 - 9 there just are too many Titans.
vs. bots
Defender, Grenade Pistol, Stun grenade / Impact grenade / Smoke(maybe?)
EMS, Precision Strike / Airstrike, Ballistic Shield, AMR / Laser Cannon
Personally I wouldn't run EMS in this build, but I also do a lot of stuff solo. You basically push aggressively with BS into objectives. Infantry gets shot, everything heavier gets naded. AMR is for medium range and vs. striders, hulks and devastators (stun and aim for head). Can kill tanks and cannons from rear. Laser Cannon is for tanks, turrets and gunships (aim for exhausts and engines). Also kills hulks and devastators if you stun for safety.
Keep your eyes more at your surroundings and the back of your mates, so they don't get shredded from behind.
Having a secured back and someone looking/calling out additional enemies walking in helps massively to not get lost in chaos.
