Both. Pistol first.

Crossbow takes some getting used to and after getting comfortable with it you might not like the pkaystyle it comes with. Pistol is a lot easier to just slot into whatever pkaystyle youre alreasy comfortable with. Instead of a secondary smg you get another 8 grenades.

Pistol is fairly useful

Pistol is the best Warbond item in this game so far. No other weapon is anyway close to "best in slot" as the grenade pistol is for secondaries.
