NEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!
Yeah, it's fun to shoot down ships, till you realize that it does almost nothing. Sometimes units on it die if you do it fast enough, other times they do not. At least with autocannon I can blast units off of the ship and have them die before they land.
Also on top of it quasar have a recharge time, which means you gonna be taking down 1 ship out of like 3-4 that come. This is easier if more than one person have quasar, but it's also easier if one person got EAT, which lands with two shots and allows you to take down two ships instead of one.
Taking down objectives, heavies, elites, is all good but so can you with many other weapons, like autocannon for example. On top of it many other weapons are also useful in other situations, mean while quasar sucks at everything else outside of taking down big boys, ships, and some objectives.
You may think that I hate quasar and you do be wrong, I love it but I also know it's not op and not even my first pick for most optimal load out.
Though shooting dropships kinda sucks anyway. Most of the units survive even when you shoot down the dropship on approach.
The laser cannon aint bad, but the AC outstrips it for heavy fire.
You get 10 shots from an AC and that's enough to completely cripple a large group of devastators or anything else before you need to drop behind cover to take a little reload time for another 10 shots. That's without factoring in a team reload.
The laser cannon also requires you maintain a lock and burn up the target, if you are decent with an AC you can hit the target and then repeat the hit at the exact same spot you shot originally while it's coming down from the recoil.
Laser cannon is a decent weapon, it's versatile, but it's not that good at crowd control.
They're talking about the gunships, not the dropships - I think anyways.
Not tried it for a while, if it can take down dropships in 3 seconds, yeah that's a big bonus... But I doubt it.
In regards to shooting dropships before the troops on them drop, there's actually a simple way to tell if they're going to survive when you shoot the dropship down.
If you shoot the dropship down before it slows down enough, You will kill all enemies on that dropship (this means you essentially need to shoot it while its still moving fairly quickly).
If the dropship has started slowing down, the enemies are highly likely to survive the ship being shot down (unless the blast of your attack also hits them in addition to the dropship).
Eruptor pairs nicely, can create distance and pop them, shoot the underside of drop ships, makes light work of striders
scorcher nice option too of course
Laser for the gunships, cannon turrets, devs and hulks
And all from the top of a nice rock
To the skies!!
