Overall, it's pretty mid, does it job as a Wish.com GL, but can't close hole for some reason.
Regardless here is the list of issues. It's explosive. While that might seem like a great thing, it is a pathetically small explosion. It won't break shipping containers of pierce armor. It is strong enough that, if anything gets within 3 meters, you'll blow yourself up shooting it. And from what I can tell, it is more likely to kill you than the grenades as well, at least the impact grenades that is. This is a problem on anything harder than challenging, as enemies can close distances fairly quickly. The enemies that it can bring down is quite limited. For instance, the berserker bots take multiple shots, even a direct hit to the weak points only sets it on fire. It will not kill a bile spewer in one shot either.
It is a semi-automatic, but beyond that it might as well be a bolt action rile. it has a "magazine" but the crossbow must draw between each shot. there is significant bullet drop on the bolts as well. The drop is enough that at anything beyond 20-30 meters you will have to aim high for. But the drop is not significant enough that you can arc shots over cover. despite looking like a clear line of sight down ADS. It is likely to hit the rock Infront of you... and kill you. "So don't stand so close to the rock," you say. Well with a bolt action weapon you are in cover, a lot. which means being behind rocks quite often, sooo that's a thing.
It is a non-stealth weapon. despite being a crossbow, albeit a powered one, it offers really no opportunity for stealth. The bolts are explosive immediately alerting everything in the area that you are there. like throwing a grenade just without the benefit of throwing a grenade.
It almost demands the support of another weapon. And none of the secondaries are powerful enough to compensate for it. because you can't use your primary to defend yourself at close range it puts a lot of stress on your off-hand weapon, which (in my opinion) is meant to quickly silence an alarm bot, or bug, or too weak to finish off something that only needs a bit more to go down. So, with that in mind, actively defending yourself from charging enemies is beyond the secondaries' ability.
Which means the crossbow demands the support of a third weapon. What do you bring in? a machine gun, a stalwart, an anti-tank? Either way you're giving up a stragem slot. And that limits your ability to deal with the variety of threats presented on the missions. Whether it be a fodder killing weapon or a heavy killing one.
These are the advantages that I can see it being used for, Despite its many drawbacks.
It's explosive. and that is effective particularly against bots. The bolts will wipe out whole patrols of walkers and fodder in a single magazine or less. against the bugs it will wipe a patrol, as long as you kill them all before they reach you.
In a group the weapon can fill a specialized roll and function within that roll amazingly well. For instance, as long as the group is together, the crossbowman deals with the majority of the fodder, one person could cover heavy enemies with a quasar cannon or something similar. If need be they, or a third can keep the tougher enemies at bay.
All in all though, garbage weapon.
Edit: Grammer
Against normal mission automatons though, its underwhelming compared to Erupter which is S+++ tier at present and better than even some support weapons (just so fun to use, and blows everything up).
Alternative Punisher Plasma
Xbow is great for people who can aim it
In spite of being explosive, it doesn't have any of the strengths of explosive weapons. Doesn't break open crates, can't destroy bug holes/fabricators, has a miserably small radius.
What role can it perform effectively? Well, it's pretty good at clearing up small trash mobs. The problem is that there are about 20+ other weapons that also do that, many of those weapons also being effective against other roles too.
Let's talk in terms of directly competing weapons:
- Punisher plasma. Pretty much the same weapon and neither of them is any good. Both are a no range, explosive-but-not-explosive weapon that's only good for mopping up trash so weak a pistol could deal with it.
- Eruptor. A weapon from the same warbond and better in every way. It hits harder against its target, its explosion hits harder and has a larger radius, complete with being a real explosion that'll destroy bug holes. The Eruptor is what an explosive weapon looks like, terrible handling aside, it'll annihilate whatever you shoot with it.
- Grenade pistol. Comparably weak explosion, but this one can destroy bug holes. Only one shot in the pipe is its main weakness, though the reload is pretty quick. On the plus side, it only occupies your secondary slot, between that and plugging holes, it makes it a much better weapon.
- Scorcher. Also has a blast radius, doesn't have any bullet drop, a much more practical general purpose weapon because it can perform the crossbow's role and do more besides.
There's never a reason to pick the crossbow unless you want a stupid meme weapon. No matter what you want it for, there's a better weapon for the job, one that will do that job better and another job too. I want to like the crossbow, I have a soft spot for uplifted low-tech weaponry in modern/sci-fi settings, but this thing is trash that fills no niche of its own.
