How's the solo play?
^^Title. I'm one of those players who wants to play alone and while I acknowledge that I will most likely be stomped on the highest difficulties, I just want to know if I can have fun and progress at a reasonable rate while playing totally alone all the time?

You can't.

you can at lower difficulties... quite hard tbh...

You can solo level 7 which has the resources needed for the best ship upgrades but it can become difficult when lots of enemies show up especially when trying to extract in the later stages of the mission. All sorts of stuff shows up and you need to kite.'

I was very antisocial at the start but eventually I started doing multiplayer and generally the games are a good experience. Every now again you get a bad game or an unjust kick but not too bad at least with my luck.

it's ok, not something i'ld do long-term

Deep Rock Galactic is a much better solo friendly game with a similar "kill lots of bugs in explosive ways" game, tbh. Definitely wouldn't recommend this one unless you are willing to play with randoms or friends.

Up to difficulty 7 you can manage solo. Not always successfully though.

Stealth and running away are viable options. Only objectives force you to engage the guards, but this can be done with overwhelming force once you unlocked the stronger stratagems and weapons.

I didn't expect so many responses so quickly! Thank you everyone!
I am currently leaning towards giving HD2 a soft pass (I'll get it on a good sale).

If you good and know the mechanics you even can do helldive difficulty 9, and yes you can have fun now it depends how much you like the game and want to challenge yourself

You can do so pretty well if you use stealth. Sneak around and the enemy won't notice you. Take out objectives. Get kills at a distance. If you throw down a turret and the enemy hasn't spotted you yet, they'll all look at the turret once it lands, letting you ambush a patrol while the turret tanks.

Not sure how realiable it is, but wearing the stealth armor I was able to start the extraction and lie down for 2 minutes and no one saw me.

I regularly solo on 9 and have been having a blast.

Ok, I have a follow up question or two: how many difficulties are there and can I progress at an ok pace at a mid level difficulty? I'm likely going to be playing at a mid level difficulty for the majority of my time.

9 difficulty levels, and you can unlock most things at lower difficulties, but you can't get certain higher level upgrades like upgrades to your ship and stuff without getting higher tier samples from higher tier difficulties.

It can be done, it can be fun.
Just don't go in expecting the game to be balanced around solo play.

This is already the subject of some heated debate on this forum and the devs have given no indication they ever intend to balance the game around solo play specifically.

That is extremely useful information. Thank you. I must ponder now.

Yeah. A lot of people on this thread are saying you CAN do it, and yes you can, but the game is decidedly NOT designed in any way for it from what I can tell, so I don't know why you WOULD when you can get the same sort of experience from a number of other games either single player or not.
