Honestly, I dont get it either, and I'm as irritated with the recent screw ups with helldivers as anyone. No matter how bad this game is becoming and how good Space Marine 2 will be, they seem like very different games.
That being said, most 40k games are "Throw $hit at wall and see what sticks". Space Marine 2 seems to be one of the few they are putting genuine effort into. Plus the pre-release stuff looks like a lot of fun.
Its also fairly ironic, because when HD2 was released I remember idiots on the Darktide and DRG discussions making endless threads about how HD2 was going to kill their games. Only for the same thing to happen now with SM2.
Who could expect that a game that has powerful weapons, hordes of enemies, and coop, could ever be a rival to HD2? Colour me surprised!
the gameplay seems similiar enough and the developer might prioritize fun over "being completely incompetent at balancing and should be fired".
it´s 40k, even tho it caught the mindvirus. that´s still better than HD2s discord run by alphabet-xirs & xems that were too incompetent to successfully ruin reddit (but obviously tried).
purging filthy aliens that illegally stepped on super terras territory... pretty much the same thing.
it really depends whether or not space marines2 is a good game. will it kill HD2? definitely not, but it will take a big chunk of HD2s playerbase... if it´s good.
tbh HD2 started dying the moment AH leadership didnt get rid of the furry communist reddit jannitors and other completely incompetent people that dont know the basics of their own game.
Though, I don't see the multiplayer aspect lasting as long as people think. A lot of people are going to play the campaign, maybe do a little multiplayer, then move on. The first game's multiplayer wasn't very deep. Maybe i'll be different.
I don't particularly like Saber Interactive, and there are good reasons to despise Focus. So there is also that.
true.
however there will be a shift from currently active HD2 players to SM2. how many people will swap really depends on how good SM2.
if SM2 fails horribly (not as bad as mindvirus garbage like suicide alphabetsquad tho) it would be interesting to see whether or not HD2 playernumbers still get a noticeable dent.
nothing surprising. even something (semi-)completely different like the next GTA releasing will be noticeable in HD2s playernumbers... except it´s current year and the next GTA might be also current year garbage... that´s still a decrease in active players for a week or two.
Sea of Thieves boards were inundated with posts about Skull and Bones because it was going to kill SoT. Dungeonborne was going to kill Dark and Darker, according to the Dark and Darker forums.
Etc... those are just games I noticed this happening around recently.
15-20 years ago every new MMO was toted as "the WOWkiller" (and nothing really was, anyways).
PUBG got similar treatment.
On one hand, HD2 has already lost 90-95% of its concurrent player base, with a good chunk of the remaining players on the brink of total apathy.
The Dev promised change (again...) in 60 days. By the end of this timelapse, the player base might have shrunk into total irrelevance.
On the other hand, everything SM2 has shown so far looks, frankly, fantastic. And it DOES look like it will scratch a very similar itch.
It is almost certain that SM2 will atract a decent portion of the inactive AND active HD2 players, and, if AH keeps Mismagaing HD2 and its community, those players might never come back.
Different game though, Darktide is a tunnel horde shooter following the footsteps of left 4 dead. It does a great job of that too. Helldivers isn't a horde shooter, even though for some reason everyone keeps thinking it is.
Space marine 2 is going to be a singleplayer campaign, coop campaign, and tunnel horde shooter. It might be a fun game for about 1 playthrough and then only the die hard 40k fans are going to stick with it. Similar trend that darktide experienced.
or it can be ♥♥♥♥, considering there hired woke personn to create the game, and it will be like concord; a complete (and deserved) crash
