Edit: also mission lenght. In drg i can finish in 20 minutes easily. So with 1.5 hours playtime you often can do your assignment with randos and have some fun in the bar at the side. In helldivers, i might not even do all 3 missions with my Team, because it just takes longer to clear the map with randos.
DRG fostered it's community over years, and released countless good updates following player feedback. HD2 seemingly doesn't. Then when groups complain about not feeling heard, you get some mindless 'skill issue' retort. So people just leave and hop to the next game. Since negative interactions always have a higher chance to dissuade someone from using a product or service, more people don't stick around or return.
Helldivers are expendable and are treated like trash so they have grown accustom to treating others like trash. There is little care if a helldiver is left behind, so long as objective is complete.
All 80k of us baby.
If HD2 wants to have a playerbase as kind as DRG they should consider how little the average player is incentivized to care about their fellow divers.
Whenever i played DRG and if i or someone else got downed all the time without fail there will always be that one glorious hero who will back track their way through hell just to revive. It's beautiful and honestly one of the best parts of DRG.
