Not sure if it's exactly faster, but it's great to slow down bigger units when you're getting surrounded. Can usually chop off a leg while backing up, and they're much less likely to catch up to you.
During the attack, try to move the mouse to one of the sides (preferably quickly), this way you can hit multiple targets, this is in the worst case, in the best case you can chop off everyone's heads with one successful "turn" (if breakpoints allow it).
I also recommend using the "correct" perk, x2 to damage feels decent.
P.S
And the axe...
Remove the knockback and let it only interrupt (only those who can theoretically be interrupted) enemy attacks no more, then yes, maybe I would recommend it, but the current state of the axe is depressing.
And ideally, all melee weapons would work on the principle of...
Mouse1: Area attack/Crowd control
Mouse1 + Mouse2:
Aimed strike/Single target
/
Or "switch" the attack pattern to R.
For those who don't like the previous option.
Of course, you need to make each weapon feel different, but that's a completely different question.
It would of been great if the axe actually was medium armor penetration then ppl would of change the tune really fast but nope, just ♥♥♥♥ load of lies being great, I rather have the shock baton instead of the axe that is how bad it is rated as, it didn't deserve to be cost 250 sc, it should of been 50 sc, sorry that is too polite, 10 sc it should of really been in.
The only sadder truth the axe is garbage, I rather have the shovel that was found in the field and I just dig myself a trench for I mean ♥♥♥♥ the axe all the way. that is the top honest answer. Super Scam axe ever, all i think the dev didn't think this through about the axe well enough.
The spear that is all u need because stun and headshot is real enough, just head shot stun and if it still standing alive, u can just run away or hit and stun it again but comes to crowds of enemies, it is better to hit and run if ur out of ammo for hit and run is always good just simple gorilla warfare tactics.
The length of the lance lets you hit and stun enemies before they reach you, even chargers can be killed with just the lance.
For voteless u can just flail the axe and it will meld them, for them a lance would be less practical
All melee attacks, butt strikes, etc. have an armor penetration rating of 3. With the exception of Chargers, for some reason the game allows you to damage their limbs, despite the fact that they already have armor class 4.
In short, the situation is the same as with throwing knives on release.
Melee weapons applying that knockback on things like Alpha Commanders or Overseers is frustrating. Couldn't they have forced melee weapons to have a daze rather than a 5m knockback push - or just... nothing of the sort? Especially the stun weapons, at least? Nothing better than pushing an enemy to safety which requires you to put yourself into a more dangerous position to finish the job, and/or opens the door for a full-health target to walk right into the space your initial target was just occupying. Big knockbacks work well with ranged weapons or even the "f" key melee attacks w/ ranged weapons, to give you space, but on the intended-for-melee weapons it can feel quite tedious//annoying.
