Magazine upgrades are pointless?
Each upgrade gives you the same exact amount of ammo, you can just have more in the mag, or more on reserve, but it always equals the same amount of rounds in total. What is the point? It doesn't feel like much of an upgrade if it's all the same and + or - a smidge of ergonomics.

nah.
more ammo = more kill
Drum mags allow you to shoot for longer periods of time, while short mags reload faster.

Illusion of choice. They still have to artificially force you to be as weak as possible so you struggle against the enemy hordes. Outside of the scifi stuff we have more powerful weapons that exist in modern day compared to this alternate futuristic timeline.

^ This. I don't see how this is a hard concept to grasp? Short mags also give better ergo which my friend swears by although I think you get pretty diminishing returns past ~50/60 personally.

Because its not an upgrade, its a customization option. You trade more shooting time for slower reload or less shooting time for faster reload. You pick which one you prefer.
the amount of bullets total do NOT change no matter what mag you choose. just how much you can shoot before reloading.

drum mag = big bulky but holds alot of bullets and reloads slower

extended = middle ground. ok mag size and not so bulky with a default reload speed

short = smallest mag able to make the gun alot more nimble and reloads faster

It changes the time until your bang stick goes "Click click click".
whats the point of this dumbass discussion
the weapon attachment system isn't supposed to be about straight upgrades. it's about trade offs. most attachments have an ergonomics penalty (except angled grips which have a recoil penalty) or in some other way are inherently a trade. this is so there is not inherently one single correct loadout that is always unarguably the best for a given gun. you customize the gun to perform as close to how you want it to as possible. big mag vs small mag is a question of frequency of reloads vs ergonomics and in some cases speed of reloads. pick whichever you fancy and once you have everything unlocked change at a whim.

its about sidegrades not straight up upgrades dude
Drum mags, shoot longer? Kill more efficiently if you can aim.
The incendiary breaker's choices definitely don't have the same amounts of ammo in their mag choices. I'm not sure about everything else, but that's one example.

Ammo reserve is a thing based on balance...
