What would also be neat is that if you could give/trade them support weapons (at least some of them), like the EAT of MG : you would get a possible interaction with "E" next to a soldier to take/give them a support weapon (and exchange if both of you already have one). If they can't use some weapons, at least they could carry them for you (could be great if you're bringing EAT and a machin-gun for instance, so you can switch fast when needed).
For bots they have high range because it usually the hell diver who shoot first and prop them into combat.
It was cute, but also immersion breaking.
Could use a better AI.
Well, you can think of them as conscripted civvies. The game pretty much treat them as civilians. Maybe if we ever get a SEAF troop drop strat, they'll have a better AI by then.
