Theory about the Illuminate
Its my pet theory that the Illuminate as the Squ'ith really were completely destroyed in the first galactic war, and that the "illuminate" we are seeing now are actually all voteless humans who have been converted into hosts for illuminate ghosts/consciousnesses that have somehow survived death. Less compatible hosts become the standard voteless, while more compatible ones turn into the overseers.

It could be that the monoliths are key for this process, and that the colonies were involved with xenoarchaeology leading to their conversion into voteless. I'm not certain, again, this is just my theory, and we're yet to see where AH are going to go with the LORE.

Definitely sounds easier than my theory, where the Illuminates were wiped out in the first war, but the Dark Fluid incident on Merida caused a time phenomena, leading actually the remnants of the Illuminates before the end of the first war through that time-wormhole from the past in the future. So the Illuminates never were wiped out, but rather escaped a wipe out by traveling into the future.

So they're time travelers, too?! Dear lord...

The reason why I think the illuminate as we now see them are made up entirely of voteless is because of the transformations that the voteless undergo. There's no reason to mutate them so thoroughly, attaining the Squ'ith physical characteristics such as the central eye and face tentacles, if all they wanted to do was use them as cannon fodder. I think the illuminate are trying to create more of their own race/ resurrect themselves using humans as a base template, and I think this is because as a psychic race they have discovered how to keep their consciousnesses persistent even when losing their bodies.

Literally an undead faction.
